Zi Ye Shi Piao: The Scholarly Silhouette
Handcrafted Golden Duan Zisha Teapot | Master Jiang Tao
The Shi Piao is one of the three most iconic and enduring shapes in the history of Yixing pottery. Among its variations, the Zi Ye style—named after the Qing Dynasty scholar Qu Ziye—is the most celebrated for its “scholarly bone.” It is a teapot defined by mathematical precision and architectural strength, curated by ZENTAOEAST for those who appreciate a vessel with both resolute character and artistic clarity.
The Architecture of the “Gourd”
The name Shi Piao literally means “Stone Gourd,” but the Zi Ye interpretation transforms this organic inspiration into a masterpiece of geometry. This teapot is built on a series of triangular relationships: from the slope of the body to the sharp angle of the handle and the spout.
Our version, crafted by Master Jiang Tao, features lines that are exceptionally crisp, upright, and resolute. It is a “Guang Su” (Plain) piece, stripped of all ornamentation to let the purity of the form speak for itself. The “press-bottom” design gives the teapot a stable, grounded presence on the tea table, embodying the Taoist ideal of being “unmoved amidst the flow.”
Luminous Earth: Original Ore Golden Duan Ni
The visual soul of this teapot is the Golden Duan Ni—a precious and sought-after variety of Duan clay. Unlike the deep tones of Zi Ni, Golden Duan Ni offers a color palette that is gentle, warm, and sophisticated, reminiscent of sun-drenched sand or aged parchment.
Aesthetic Harmony: The soft, creamy hue of the clay perfectly complements the “Oatmeal” aesthetic of ZENTAOEAST, creating a visual sense of peace.
Precision Firing: This teapot has been fired twice in an Electric Kiln. This method provides a clean, oxygen-rich environment that allows the Golden Duan Ni to achieve its most vibrant and “pure” color, free from impurities.
The Versatile Companion: At 200ml, this is a universal vessel. Its smooth and effortless pour, combined with excellent heat retention, makes it exceptionally versatile—ideal for bringing out the floral notes of Oolong, the maltiness of Keemun black tea, or the depth of aged Puerh.
The Hand of a Master
This teapot is the work of Master Jiang Tao. With over 30 years of experience, Master Jiang understands that in a Ziye Shi Piao, there is nowhere to hide. Every line must be straight; every transition must be decisive.
This vessel is half-handmade, utilizing a manual molding tool to ensure the absolute geometric perfection of the triangular body, while the spout, handle, and intricate finishing are all executed by Master Jiang’s practiced hands. In fact, no machine was used in it’s shaping as the use of the tool is entirely manual. It carries his personal seal, “Jiang Tao Zhi Tao” (江涛制陶), a guarantee of a vessel born from a “True Heart.”
Curator’s Verdict
“In the world of Zisha, the Ziye Shi Piao is like a well-written poem—it is concise, structured, and profoundly deep. I chose this specific piece because the Golden Duan Ni softens the ‘hardness’ of the geometry. Its flow is as decisive as its lines. It is a practical masterpiece that proves true beauty needs no decoration.”
