Winter’s Resilience: Hand-painted “Ice Plum” Wood-fired Teapot
Hand-painted Underglaze Blue | Yun Ye Wood-fired Kiln | 120ml
In the lexicon of Eastern aesthetics, the plum blossom is the herald of spring, blooming while the frost still clings to the earth. At ZENTAOEAST, we present the Winter’s Resilience teapot—a 120ml masterpiece of Qinghua (Blue and White) porcelain that captures the scholarly spirit of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a vessel of “Quiet Strength,” designed for those who find beauty in the enduring soul.
The Motif: A Dialogue Between Ice and Bloom
The “Ice Plum” (Bīng Méi) pattern is a masterful visual metaphor.
The Cracked Ice: The background is rendered using the traditional Fenshui (Blue Washing) technique. The cobalt blue is applied in rhythmic layers to mimic the jagged, translucent fissures of a frozen pond in deep winter.
The Blossoms: White plum flowers are left in “negative space” or delicately outlined, appearing to float upon the icy surface.
The Philosophy: To the ancient scholar, this represented the “Unbending Spirit”—the ability to maintain one’s purity and fragrance even when surrounded by the coldness of the world. It is the “Architecture of Silence” applied to the brush.
The Alchemy of the Resonant Wilderness: Yun Ye Kiln
This teapot was born in the chambers of the Yun Ye Kiln (韵野柴窑), a studio dedicated to the raw, unpredictable beauty of wood-firing.
The Wood-fired Soul: Fired with pine wood at 1300°C, the glaze has a “suet-jade” luster—moist, thick, and incredibly tactile. The pine resin creates a natural “oiliness” on the surface that feels warm and alive in the palm.
Archaic Form: The silhouette is “Gǔ Zhuō” (Archaic and Rugged). Every curve is hand-thrown and hand-trimmed, resulting in a form that feels grounded and stable, echoing the weighted dignity of ancient stone.
An Intimate Ritual
At 120ml, this petite teapot is perfectly calibrated for a solitary meditation or a focused session of our Ancestral Teas. Its small scale ensures that the “Qi” of the tea remains concentrated, while the hand-painted ice pattern provides a visual anchor for your thoughts. On its base, it carries the hand-painted mark of the kiln: “Yùn Yě” (韵野).
Curator’s Verdict
“The Ice Plum motif is my personal benchmark for ‘Scholarly Grace.’ I chose this teapot from Yun Ye Kiln because the blue ink doesn’t just sit on the porcelain—it feels like it has seeped into the very bone of the piece. To hold this 120ml vessel is to feel the ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ of the winter earth and the delicate hope of the coming spring. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ for the soul that values integrity above all else.”
