Vermillion Twilight: The Plum Blossom & Kiln-Change Master Cup
Handcrafted Original Ore Masterpiece | Master Luo Shiming (Jingdezhen) | 140ml
In the world of ZENTAOEAST, the most profound beauty arises where the intention of the artist meets the unpredictability of the flame. The Vermillion Twilight cup is a spiritual anchor in our collection—a vessel that narrates the enduring spirit of the East through a landscape of fire and mineral.
The Motif: An Ancient Bloom in Mineral Ink
One side of this master cup features a hand-rendered Ancient Plum Blossom (Lǎo Shù Méihuā).
The Technique: Master Luo Shiming uses a high-concentration mineral glaze to “paint” the gnarled branches and delicate blossoms. Unlike standard overglaze painting, this motif is part of the vessel’s mineral skin.
The Symbolism: The plum blossom, the first to bloom amidst the winter frost, represents resilience, purity, and the “True Heart” that remains unmoved by external chaos. It is a scholarly nod to the “Architecture of Silence” found in the ancestral gardens of Huizhou.
The Tapestry: Fire, Ash, and Earth
While one side carries the artist’s brushstroke, the rest of the cup is a canvas for the kiln itself. Its surface is a complex, tactile record of a 30-hour struggle within the 1300°C pine fire:
Mineral Metamorphosis: The rich Iron and Tin particles within the original ore clay have reached their melting point, creating a surface speckled with natural tin spots (Xī Bān) and iron freckles.
The Dance of Falling Ash: The vaporized resin of the Masson Pine wood has combined with the swirling wood ash to create a natural “Oil Painting” glaze. This falling ash (Luò Huī) interacts with the impurities in the ore, resulting in unpredictable streaks of royal purple and electric blue—a phenomenon known as Yao Bian (Kiln Change).
Visual Narrative: The result is a cup that looks like a burning sky. It transitions from a deep, “bloody” vermillion to a dark, weathered ochre, mirroring the shifting light of a mountain sunset.
Form & Purpose: The 140ml Sanctuary
The Master Silhouette: Standing at 6.2cm tall with a 7.4cm flared mouth, this is a substantial “Master Cup” (140ml). It is designed to be the centerpiece of your tea table, providing a generous and weighted presence in the palm.
Aromatic Clarity: The flared rim expands the tea’s surface, allowing the complex aromatics of an Ancestral Keemun or an aged Oolong to breathe, while the thick walls retain the heat of the ritual.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Vermillion Twilight is a paradox of heat and stillness. I am moved by the single branch of plum blossom that emerges from the chaotic fire—it is a reminder that beauty often requires the endurance of the flame. I chose this 140ml piece for its incredible ‘Bone.’ The texture is rugged, the color is visceral, and the hand-painted plum adds a layer of intellectual dignity. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ for those who seek to find life blooming even in the deepest twilight.”
