The Lost Tribute: Traditional Charcoal-Roasted Huo Shan Yellow Tea
Heritage “Men Huang” Process | Jinji Mountain Heirloom Seeds | Master Liu Feng | April 2026
“Three Yellows, one ancient soul: A rare return to the authentic imperial yellow tea of the Tang Dynasty.”
At ZENTAOEAST, we specialize in “Archaeological Teas”—authentic revivals of lost traditions. This Traditional Huo Shan Yellow Tea is a profound masterpiece of heritage. Harvested on April 20, 2026, from the “Jinji” (Golden Rooster) heirloom tea trees in the high-altitude forests of Jinji Mountain, Dahuaping, Huoshan, this tea is handcrafted by Master Liu Feng using a near-extinct method that defines the true essence of Yellow Tea.
The Conflict: A Search for the “True Yellow”
Most modern Huo Shan Huang Ya found in the market today has been “Green-tea-ified.” To cater to the modern demand for bright green leaves, many producers skip the core process of “Men Huang” (Sweltering/Yellowing). The result is a tea that looks like green tea and acts like green tea.
Our tea is different. It restores the traditional “Three Yellows”: the dry leaves are dark-yellow, the soup is an elegant apricot-yellow, and the steeped leaves are a tender, luminous yellow. This is the true face of the imperial tribute tea of the Tang Dynasty.
The Lineage: Rescuing a Dying Craft
In the early 1970s, the traditional craft of Huo Shan Yellow Tea was on the brink of extinction. In 1972, a group of experts found Master Zhan Xuchun, an 80-year-old farmer who held the last memories of the ancient craft. Under his guidance, the first batch of authentic yellow tea was revived and sent to the State Council.
Master Liu Feng is a direct student of Master Zhan. He continues to preserve this living heritage, refusing to take shortcuts. He spends his nights over glowing coals, meticulously monitoring the delicate micro-fermentation that transforms green bitterness into golden sweetness.
The Alchemy: Men Huang & “Pulling the Old Fire”
The unique character of this tea is forged through two grueling processes:
Men Huang (Muffled Yellowing): Through precise control of heat and moisture, the tea undergoes a slow micro-fermentation. This process breaks down harsh polyphenols, removing the “grassy” bite of green tea and replacing it with a thick, velvety texture.
La Lao Huo (Pulling the Old Fire): This is a physically demanding ritual. Two masters carry a large bamboo cage filled with tea leaves, moving it rapidly over 100°C+ charcoal fires. This high-heat flash-firing locks in the aroma and infuses the tea with its signature “toasted” soul.
The Sensory Experience: Toasted Rice & Rice-Soup Texture
Aroma: It has completely shed the raw grassiness of green tea. Instead, it offers an intoxicating aroma of toasted rice crust (Guoba), roasted chestnuts, and a deep, honeyed sweetness.
Palate: The soup is remarkably thick and viscous, possessing what we call a “Rice-Soup Texture” (Mi Tang Gan). It is mellow, non-astringent, and incredibly gentle on the stomach.
Tea Qi: Unlike the stimulating nature of green tea, this yellow tea is warm and soothing—perfect for those who find green tea too aggressive for their digestion.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Traditional Huo Shan Yellow Tea is a time capsule. If you’ve always wanted to love green tea but found it too ‘cold’ or harsh for your stomach, this is your tea. The La Lao Huo process gives it a comforting, toasted warmth that I find addictive. It is a rare privilege to source a yellow tea that hasn’t been ‘Green-tea-ified’—it is thick, golden, and deeply soulful.”
