The Whispering Grove: Impressionist Wood-fired Fair-cup
Handcrafted Original Ore Masterpiece | Master Luo Shiming (Jingdezhen) | 200ml
In the geometry of a tea ceremony, the Gongdao Bei (Fair-cup) is the vessel of equilibrium. It is the silent arbiter that ensures every cup receives the same strength and soul. At ZENTAOEAST, we present The Whispering Grove—a 200ml masterpiece where the functional “Justice” of the tea table meets the high-fire expressionism of Master Luo Shiming.
The Motif: A Meditation on a Single Leaf
The defining soul of this fair-cup is the Hand-painted Autumnal Leaf featured on its side.
Impressionist Touch: Utilizing the Engobe (化妆土) technique, Master Luo layers liquid mineral clays to “build” the image. The leaf isn’t just a flat drawing; it has a physical, “impasto” texture that mimics the organic veins of a real forest find.
The Philosophy: It captures the exact moment of a leaf’s descent—a symbol of the Taoist cycle of return and the Zen appreciation for the fleeting present.
The Alchemy: Fire, Ash, and Mineral
Forged for thirty hours in a traditional Pine-wood Kiln at 1300°C, the fair-cup has survived a volcanic transformation:
The Kiln-Change (Yao Bian): As seen in the vibrant streaks of cobalt blue and deep violet, the iron and tin within the original ore have reacted to the “Reduction Flame.” These colors are not applied by a brush; they are the “bloom” of the earth under extreme pressure.
The Pine Resin Baptism: The high oil content of the Masson Pine wood has vaporized and settled into the glaze, creating a surface that is unctuous, “greasy,” and jade-like to the touch—a hallmark of Master Luo’s signature style.
The Temperature of the Hand: Visible Rhythms
This vessel is an honest record of its own creation.
The Internal Ridges: Upon peering inside, you will find the clear, rhythmic throwing marks left by the Master’s fingers as the clay spun on the wheel. These concentric lines serve as a tactile reminder of the “Temperature of the Hand” that birthed this object from mountain mud.
Functional Poise: Standing at 6cm tall with a wide 8.7cm mouth, its 200ml capacity allows for the perfect aeration of your Ancestral Tea harvests. The hand-trimmed spout ensures a decisive, graceful pour without a single wasted drop.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Whispering Grove is the anchor of our ‘Earthy Canvas’ series. I am captivated by the contrast between the rugged, stone-like texture of the base and the brilliant, celestial blues and purples of the kiln-change. It is a vessel that carries the weight of the forest and the clarity of the stream. At 200ml, it is the perfect companion for a shared ritual, a piece of ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ that brings dignity to every pour.”
