The Solitary Leaf: Impressionist Wood-fired Two-Piece Gaiwan

Handcrafted Original Ore Masterpiece | Master Luo Shiming (Jingdezhen) | 130ml

In the ritual of tea, the Gaiwan is the sanctuary where the leaf returns to the water. At ZENTAOEAST, we present The Solitary Leaf—a “Liang Cai” (Two-Piece) Gaiwan that embodies the essence of “Sublime Subtraction.” It is a vessel that doesn’t just brew tea; it captures the silent dialogue between a master’s hand and the ancient minerals of the earth.

The Motif: A Dialogue of Leaves

Adorned with hand-painted Autumnal Leaves on both the lid and one side of the bowl, this vessel tells a story of cyclical harmony.

  • The Design: Using the Engobe (化妆土) technique, the leaves are built up with liquid mineral clay, giving them a three-dimensional, “sculpted” feel.

  • The Zen of One: The singular leaf motif mirrors the Zen proverb: “One leaf falls, and the world knows autumn.” It is a visual anchor that invites the practitioner to find the infinite within the minuscule.

The Mark of the Wheel: Visible Rhythms

This Gaiwan is a celebration of the “Temperature of the Hand.”

  • Throwing Marks: Upon lifting the lid, the interior reveals the bold, rhythmic ridges left by the Master’s fingers as he pulled the clay on the potter’s wheel. These concentric “fingerprints of the soul” are not flaws; they are the honest evidence of its 100% handcrafted origin, adding a deep tactile resonance to every session.

  • The “Liang Cai” Silhouette: Standing at 7.5cm tall, this two-piece design (Bowl and Lid) offers a modern, streamlined elegance. The flared rim is hand-trimmed to fit the human grip perfectly, facilitating a controlled and graceful pour.

The Alchemy of 1300°C Pine Fire

Forged in a traditional Pine-wood Kiln for thirty hours, the surface is a geological record of fire and ash.

  • Original Ore Purity: Crafted from unpurified mountain clay, the iron and tin within the ore have surfaced as natural tin spots and rustic iron specks, shimmering like frozen embers under the thick, moist glaze.

  • Resinous Luster: The vaporized oils of the Masson Pine have imparted a “Jade-like” warmth to the surface, creating a texture that is “refined but not greasy”—a vessel built to age and grow more radiant over a lifetime of use.

Curator’s Verdict

“The Solitary Leaf Gaiwan is my personal favorite for morning rituals. At 130ml, it provides a perfectly intimate space for our Ancestral Teas. I am particularly moved by the visible throwing marks inside the bowl—they remind me that this vessel was once a soft piece of mud, given form by a master’s intention. It is a piece of ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ that feels incredibly noble in the hand.”

— Richard Zhang, Founding Curator
