The Mountain’s Quill: Hand-chiseled Tin & Porcupine Tea Shovel
Ethically Sourced Porcupine Quill | Chiseled Bamboo-Leaf Head | Artisan Li Wenshu
In the choreography of a Gongfu tea session, the transition of dry leaves from the carrier to the teapot is a moment of profound anticipation. At ZENTAOEAST, we present The Mountain’s Quill—a specialized Tea Shovel (Chá Bō) designed to guide your finest harvests with grace and intention. It is a bridge between the untamed forests of Qimen and the focused stillness of your tea table.
The Alchemy of Percussion: Hand-hammered Tin
The upper half of this tool is a 9.5cm sculpture of pure, hand-forged tin. Unlike industrial tools with sterile, polished surfaces, the entire tin section is forged through thousands of rhythmic hammer strikes.
The Chiseled Soul: From the slender stem to the 2.8cm bamboo-leaf head, the surface is covered in visible chisel marks and hammer facets. Master Li Wenshu deliberately refuses to sand these away, preserving the raw “honesty” of the metal.
A Landscape of Metal: These marks catch the light at different angles, mimicking the flickering reflection of sunlight on the rippling waters of the Shunxi Source.
The Art of Guidance: The 2.8cm Bamboo Leaf
The terminal end is sculpted into a delicate 2.8cm leaf silhouette.
The Curvature: The leaf is hammered into an elegant, functional arc, designed to cradle whole-leaf teas like The Sovereign Bloom and allow them to glide into the vessel with a rhythmic ease that honors the integrity of the harvest.
The Artist’s Discovery: Li Wenshu
This unique piece was born in the hidden studio of Li Wenshu, an independent creator based in Qimen. Li is a “Seeker of the Woods,” an artist who finds raw materials where others see only wilderness. His work is a testament to our “True Heart” standard—rejecting industrial uniformity to celebrate the erratic, beautiful logic of nature.
The Construction: Fire and Forest
At a total length of approximately 20cm (7.9 inches), this tool is a study in balanced materials:
The Handle (10.5cm): The handle is a 10.5cm natural porcupine quill, ethically collected by Li Wenshu during his treks through the mountains. These quills are naturally shed; no animals were harmed. The quill is secured to the tin section with hand-wrapped metal wire, a primitive yet permanent bond that honors the “Temperature of the Hand.”
Curator’s Verdict
“I am moved by the ‘honesty’ of this piece. To leave the chisel marks on the tin is an act of artistic courage. It tells the user: ‘A human being was here, struggling with fire and metal to create this for you.’ Master Li Wenshu has captured the ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ of the forest floor and refined it into a high-precision tool. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ that turns the act of loading tea into a ritual of wild connection.”
