The Lotus Muse: Qingbai Porcelain Xi Shi Teapot
Hand-carved Lotus | He Qi Studio (Jingdezhen) | Curator’s Special Offering
In the world of ZENTAOEAST, perfection is not the absence of marks, but the presence of soul. The Lotus Muse is a vessel of ethereal grace, crafted in the legendary Qingbai (Bluish-white) style that once defined the high aesthetic of the Song Dynasty. This 200ml teapot is a dialogue between the purity of the lotus and the honest reality of the earth.
The Material: Jade in Porcelain Form
Qingbai porcelain is celebrated for its “moist” (Yíng Rùn) glaze—a texture so lustrous it mimics the cool, translucent depth of suet jade.
The Hue: The color is a delicate “Shadow Blue,” a white that carries a whisper of the sky after rain.
The Carving: On the front of the vessel, a single lotus blossom is meticulously carved by hand. The petals are rendered with fluid, minimalist strokes, appearing as though they are floating within the glaze itself.
The Studio: He Qi (惒器)
This teapot is an authentic creation from He Qi Studio, one of Jingdezhen’s most respected modern minimalist houses.
The Philosophy: Their name, He Qi (惒器), translates to ‘Vessels of Heart-felt Harmony.’ They operate on the principle that ‘Vessels carry the Tao; harmony from the heart cultivates the self.’
The Aesthetic: Their work is a bridge between ancient Song Dynasty restraint and modern lifestyle aesthetics, focusing on lines that are clean, quiet, and profoundly Zen.
The “Beauty Mark”: A Story of Acceptance
Upon the rim of this specific teapot, there lies a tiny iron mineral spot. In a standard factory, this would be deemed a “flaw.” At ZENTAOEAST, we see it differently.
A Natural Signature: This spot is a result of the escaped mineral content in the purified clay, a “beauty mark” (美人痣) bestowed by the kiln. It is a sign that this porcelain is a living product of the earth, not a sterile industrial clone.
A Gift of Resonance: Because of this unique mark, we are offering this masterpiece at a 70% reduction (3折). It is a rare opportunity to own a high-level studio piece that carries a unique character found in no other vessel.
The Classic Form: Xi Shi
Named after the legendary beauty of ancient China, the Xi Shi silhouette is prized for its generous curves and ergonomic balance. At 200ml, it is an ideal companion for a peaceful session of Keemun or Oolong, fitting comfortably in the palm like a warm river stone.
Curator’s Verdict
“I was immediately drawn to this teapot at the He Qi studio. While others saw a defect, I saw a ‘Beauty Mark.’ It reminds me of the ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ we strive for—the honesty of the material coming to the surface. The Qingbai glaze is exceptionally moist, and the hand-carved lotus has a rhythmic vitality. This is a teapot for a collector who values the truth of the craft over the sterility of perfection. It is a lifelong companion with a story to tell.”
