The Lone Secret: Master Fan’s “Mi Se” Song Alms Bowl
1-of-1 Collection | Jade-ified “Secret Color” | Inspired by Song Dynasty Artifacts
In the history of Chinese ceramics, Mi Se (Secret Color) is the most enigmatic of all glazes. Historically reserved for the Tang and Five Dynasties emperors, it was a color meant to be felt more than seen. At ZENTAOEAST, we are honored to present a singular masterpiece: the only Secret Color Song Alms Bowl ever created by Master Fan Daoming—a vessel that transforms ancient imperial glass into modern living jade.
A Masterpiece Explained: The Curator’s Encounter
During our pilgrimage to the Lazy Fire Kiln, Master Fan Daoming personally presented this vessel to us as his “De Yi Zhi Zuo” (Proudest Work). In a career spanning forty years, this is the first and only time he has successfully achieved this specific synergy of form and fire. To hold this 160ml bowl is to hold the private dialogue between a Taoist master and the soul of the Song Dynasty.
The Form: Born of Ancient Restoration
The silhouette of this bowl is a precise, scaled-down revival of a Song Dynasty Alms Bowl (Bó Yú).
The Scholarly Lineage: Master Fan’s early career in Beijing was dedicated to the meticulous restoration of ancient artifacts. He spent years touching, measuring, and breathing the same air as Tang and Song masterpieces.
The Proportion: He utilized his deep understanding of archeological geometry to scale this bowl to a perfect 8.7cm diameter, creating a vessel that feels stable, grounded, and “ancient” in the palm of the hand.
The Alchemy: Beyond the Glass (玉化 – Jade-ification)
Traditional “Secret Color” porcelain of the Tang Dynasty is characterized by a “Glassy” vitrification. Master Fan, however, has achieved the impossible: Jade-ification.
The Formula: Through his proprietary blend of jade and gemstone powders, the glaze does not merely sit on the surface like glass; it possesses the unctuous, deep-seated luster of nephrite.
The 1300°C Gauntlet: To achieve this specific “Mi Se” hue, the kiln must sustain a peak temperature of over 1300°C for a continuous 3 hours.
A Rare Survivor: At this extreme intensity, the risk of the clay collapsing or the glaze “boiling” is nearly absolute. The success rate for a piece of this magnitude is so low that, to date, Master Fan has only produced this single successful piece. It is a survivor of the flame.
Functional Stillness
At 160ml, this is more than a cup; it is a “Master Bowl.” Its inward-curving rim and weighted base provide a sanctuary for your finest Ancestral Tea. It captures the scent and the heat within its jade walls, allowing you to contemplate the “Secret Color” that has haunted the dreams of poets and emperors for a thousand years.
Curator’s Verdict
“The ‘Lone Secret’ bowl is the reason ZENTAOEAST exists. It represents a lifetime of knowledge—from artifact restoration to Taoist cultivation—distilled into a single object. I sat with Master Fan for three hours as he explained the ‘Jade-ification’ of this glaze. It is ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ refined to a state of imperial grace. For the true collector, this is not a purchase; it is the acquisition of a singular moment in the history of porcelain.”
