The Imperial Pond: Xuande-Style “Man Chi Jiao” Qinghua Cup
Hand-painted Blue & White Porcelain | Jian Tang Qi Studio | Wood-fired Masterpiece
When the cobalt of the 15th century awakens within the kiln’s flame, six hundred years of history dissolve into a single vessel. At ZENTAOEAST, we present the Imperial Pond—a flared-rim “Gang” cup that breathes life into the poetic elegance of the Ming Dynasty. This is not a mere object; it is a “Living Ancestor,” bringing the stillness of an ancient lotus pond to the modern practitioner.
The Motif: “Man Chi Jiao” (The Charming Pond)
The cup is adorned with the legendary Mǎn Chí Jiāo pattern—a motif of mandarin ducks playing amidst a lush lotus pond.
A Scholarly Narrative: Large, rhythmic lotus leaves, swaying water reeds, and mandarin ducks swimming in pairs. In Eastern aesthetics, this represents a state of perfect domestic harmony and the lush vitality of nature.
The Brushwork: Painted with an “Old-Soul” technique, the strokes are experienced and decisive. The ducks appear to glide through the glaze, their forms defined by the rhythmic layers of blue ink.
The Alchemy of Fire: Wood-fired Sumali Essence
This 150ml cup is the result of a rigorous Traditional Wood-firing (Chai Yao) process using raw mineral glazes.
Sumali Blue Resonance: The cobalt imitates the legendary “Sumali Blue” of the Yongle and Xuande eras. It features the celebrated “Smudging Effect” and deep, resonant blue tones that tilt toward violet.
The Tin Spots (Xī Bān): Look closely at the dark blue areas—you will see shimmering “Tin Spots” or iron-oxide crystals that have sunk deep into the porcelain bone. This “rust” of the kiln is the gold standard for authentic high-end blue and white porcelain.
The Glaze: The surface is moist and “oily,” resembling the luster of fine jade. Fired at 1300°C, the porcelain is fully vitrified, providing a crisp resonance and a temperature-stable sanctuary for your tea.
The Source: Jian Tang Qi & the Fan Jia Jing Lineage
This vessel originates from Jian Tang Qi, a discreet studio in the heart of Fan Jia Jing, led by the esteemed Ms. Huang.
A Sanctuary of Mastery: For over thirty years, Ms. Huang has cultivated relationships with the most skilled “Revivalist” painters in Jingdezhen.
Redefining Heritage: While Fan Jia Jing is often misunderstood, ZENTAOEAST honors the artisans there who spend their lives deciphering the silent language of the ancients. They are the bridge that allows us to hold a piece of history—built to last, intended to be passed down.
Curator’s Verdict
“When tea meets the ‘Man Chi Jiao’ cup, the session transforms into a visual meditation. I chose this piece from Jian Tang Qi because the blue is ‘Heavy’—it feels as though it has been forged by centuries of starlight and river water. At 150ml, it has a generous, comforting weight. It is ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ refined into imperial grace—a companion that will only grow more radiant as you use it to brew our Sovereign Bloom Keemun.”
