The Forest Ruby: 2024 Tongqinghe Wild-Growth 200G Ripe Puerh Cakes
Small-Batch “Off-Ground” Fermentation | Yao Lin’s Heritage | Primeval Forest Terroir | 200g Cake
In the remote canyons of Tongqinghe, nature does not provide; it commands. Known as the “Hidden Crown” of the Yiwu region, Tongqinghe is a landscape of dense forests and rushing water. At ZENTAOEAST, we present a rare expression of this terroir: a 2024 vintage Ripe (Shu) Puerh that captures the raw power of the wilderness through a ritual of absolute purity.
The Legacy: A Father’s Untamed Forest
This tea is born from the trees planted over twenty years ago by the father of Yao Lin, a woman of the Yao ethnic group whose family has guarded these mountains for generations.
Zero Intervention: These Large-leaf Arbor trees are scattered within the primeval forest. They have never been pruned, fertilized, or touched by pesticides.
Wild Energy: Growing amidst diverse vegetation, the roots have absorbed the complex mineral “Qi” of an undisturbed ecosystem. The harvest on March 18, 2024, represents the concentrated essence of a single spring in the deep woods.
The Vow of Purity: Small-Basket Fermentation
For years, Yao Lin refused to produce Ripe Puerh. Like many purists, she was wary of the traditional “wet-piling” process, fearing it lacked the cleanliness required for a truly sacred leaf. Her perspective shifted only when she discovered the potential of high-end, small-batch craftsmanship.
The “Non-Touch” Craft: To ensure absolute hygiene, this tea underwent Small-Basket Off-Ground Fermentation (Xiǎo Luó Kuāng Lí Dì Fā Jiào). By keeping the tea away from the floor and fermenting it in breathable, artisanal baskets, she achieved a level of aerobic precision that large-scale factories cannot match.
The Master’s Touch: To guide this delicate process, Yao Lin invited a legendary master with over 50 years of experience to monitor the heat and moisture. The result is a Ripe Puerh that is profoundly clean, vibrant, and honest.
Sensory Profile: The Breath of the Mountain
The Liquor: Pours a brilliant, crystalline red—a gemstone luster that mirrors a polished ruby.
The Aroma: Unlike standard Ripe Puerh, it lacks any “earthy” or “damp” notes. Instead, it offers a deep, resonant breath of the primeval forest, with undertones of sweet wood and wild minerals.
The Palate: Incredibly smooth and lubricated (Rùn Huá). It coats the tongue like liquid silk, delivering a powerful returning sweetness (Hui Gan) and a structural weight that only wild-growth trees can provide.
Curator’s Verdict
“Tongqinghe Ripe Puerh is a paradox—it is as thick as oil yet as clean as a mountain spring. I chose this specific harvest from Yao Lin because it shatters the stereotype that Shu Puerh must be ‘musty.’ The small-basket process allows the wild character of the Guniujiang-like forest to shine through. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ for the skeptic and the connoisseur alike—a ruby in the cup that grounds your energy with every sip.”
