The Foliated Moon: Handcrafted Qingbai “Shadow Blue” Tea Cup
Song-Style Literati Revival | He Qi Studio (Jingdezhen) | Jade-Like Luster | 125ml
In the minimalist pursuit of the Song Dynasty, a tea cup was not just a vessel, but a medium for light and shadow. The Foliated Moon is an evocative revival of the legendary Qingbai (Shadow Blue) porcelain. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this offering as a tribute to the “Clear, Elegant, and Quiet” spirit of the ancient scholar’s studio.
The Ancestry of Shadow Blue: “Jade in Porcelain”
Jingdezhen’s Qingbai porcelain is historically celebrated for its unique chromatic personality: “White within the blue, blue within the white.”
The Luster: Fired in a high-temperature reduction atmosphere, the glaze achieves a moist, translucent depth that mimics the cool touch of suet jade.
The Flow of Light: Much like water under moonlight, the glaze pools slightly at the “waist” and the base, revealing a soft cerulean soul that shifts as you rotate the cup in your hand.
The Form: A Natural Rhythms
The silhouette of this cup is a masterful exercise in “Sublime Subtraction”:
The Foliated Rim (Huā Kǒu): The rim features a natural, subtly undulating curve, inspired by the organic symmetry of a five-petaled lotus or mallow blossom. This design, pioneered in the Song Dynasty, reflects the Taoist reverence for natural forms.
The Folded Waist (Zhé Yāo): The shallow belly tapers inward at the waist before descending to a refined, small foot ring. This architecture provides an exceptionally elegant grip and a “weightless” aesthetic on the tea table.
The Temperature of the Hand: Every cup is hand-thrown and hand-trimmed. The delicate瓷胎 (porcelain body) is refined until it possesses a resonant, paper-thin quality that allows the energy of the tea to be felt immediately.
The Spirit of He Qi (惒器)
Produced by the He Qi Studio in Jingdezhen, a workshop dedicated to the modern restoration of literati-style teaware. Their name, He Qi, translates to “Vessels of Heart-felt Harmony”—a philosophy that prioritizes the internal peace of the user over external ornament. On its base, each cup carries the hand-stamped seal: “Jǐngdé Hé Qì” (景德惒器).
Curator’s Verdict
“The beauty of this 125ml Qingbai cup lies in its ‘Transparency.’ It doesn’t hide behind colors or patterns; it relies entirely on the quality of the glaze and the honesty of the form. I chose this for the ZENTAOEAST collection because it embodies ‘Quietude.’ Holding this foliated rim to your lips is like drinking from a jade-rimmed pool in a silent garden. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ for those who appreciate the poetry of the understated.”
