The Celestial Sphere: Hand-thrown Jianshui Wood-fired Teapot

1300°C Naked Firing | Xing Yao Studio | 210ml | Rugged Wabi-sabi Aesthetic

In the pursuit of Eastern stillness, some vessels are polished to perfection, while others are left to whisper the story of their birth. The Celestial Sphere is a modern reinterpretation of the legendary “Xi Shi” silhouette, hand-thrown from the iron-rich silt of Jianshui and tempered in the unpredictable dance of a wood fire. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this vessel for those who seek the “True Heart” of the clay—unadorned, honest, and profoundly alive.

The Aesthetic: A Modern Literati Soul

This teapot is an exercise in “Quietude and Vitality”:

  • The Silhouette: A full, rounded orb with natural shoulder lines that flow effortlessly. The short, powerful spout and circular ear handle are calibrated in perfect proportion to the spherical knob.

  • The Unpolished Truth: Unlike standard Jianshui pottery which is often polished to a mirror-shine, this piece retains its original throwing ridges (Xuán Wén) and raw clay texture. The master’s finger marks on the spinning wheel remain as a tactile record of the “Temperature of the Hand.”

  • Wabi-Sabi Spirit: The high-temperature wood-firing has bestowed a deep, dark brown color with natural Kiln Change (Yáo Biàn) markings. It is a masterpiece of “Rugged Clumsiness” (Dà Qiǎo Ruò Zhuó), where human intent and fire’s accident meet.

Jianshui vs. Yixing: The Soul of the Silt

Understanding the material is essential to the ritual:

  • Yixing Zisha (The Skeletal Beauty): Sandy clay, low stickiness. Formed by rhythmic beating of slabs. Its beauty lies in Geometric Precision and Linear Bone.

  • Jianshui Zitao (The Fluid Soul): Extremely fine-grained silt, high elasticity. Formed by the spinning wheel. Its beauty lies in Fluid Curves and Organic Flow.

  • The Brewing Edge: Due to its fine, high-density structure, Jianshui Zitao vitrifies into a denser state than Zisha, offering exceptional heat retention. This makes it the supreme choice for brewing Aged Puerh and Wuyi Rock Teas (Yancha), as it forces the deep, mineral-rich aromatics to their fullest expression.

Practical Gravity

This 210ml vessel possesses a significant “Ya Shou Gan” (Hand-pressure weight). It feels substantial and grounded in the palm—a physical anchor for your ritual. The wide mouth allows for effortless tea loading, and the pour is remarkably smooth and assertive. On its base, it carries the seal of the studio: “Xīng Yáo” (星窑 – Star Kiln).

Curator’s Verdict

“When I first weighed the Xing Yao Xi Shi in my hand, I felt the stability of a mountain stone. I am moved by its refusal to be ‘pretty.’ By keeping the throwing marks and the raw kiln scars, it reminds us that we are part of a living, imperfect world. At 210ml, it is a generous companion for shared stillness. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ that will grow oilier and deeper as it drinks the tea of your journey.”
