The Ancestral Monarch: First Flush Houkeng Taiping Houkui
Heirloom “Shi Da Ye” Cultivar | Sexually Reproduced Native Species | Harvested April 15, 2026
In the vast landscape of Chinese green teas, Taiping Houkui is a formidable anomaly. While its peers—Longjing and Biluochun—celebrate the tiny, delicate bud, the “Monkey King” of Taiping commands respect with its majestic scale and unhurried maturity. At ZENTAOEAST, we present the April 15th First Flush: a tea that refuses to compete with the early spring hype, choosing instead the deep, resonant substance of the ancestral mountains.
The Legend of the Giant Leaf
The story of Houkui began around the year 1900 at the rocky heights of Phoenix Peak (Fènghuáng Jiān). Its secret lies in the extraordinary Shi Da Ye (Persimmon Large Leaf) cultivar. Though technically a shrub, its leaves are the largest in the green tea world.
In the unique micro-climate and mineral-rich soil of Houkeng, these leaves grow to a remarkable 7 to 8 centimeters while remaining miraculously tender. This “persistence of tenderness” allows the plant to absorb a profound concentration of amino acids and minerals before it is ever harvested by the master’s hand.
Ancestral Tea: The Soul of the “Old Soil” Species
We call our collection Ancestral Tea because we prioritize the genetic diversity of Heirloom, seed-grown populations (Qǔntǐzhǒng) over modern, high-yield clones.
Integrity over Uniformity: Since the 1980s, modern clones (like Xinkui No. 2) have been bred for standardized beauty and loud, immediate fragrance. While they produce “pretty” leaves, our Ancestral Quntizhong (Old Soil Species) is a natural hybrid. These bushes grow at varying heights and shapes, yielding leaves that are irregular and honest.
The Power of the Deep Root: Because they are grown from seeds, these “Soil Species” possess root systems that pierce deep into the rocky crevices of the mountains. They offer a complexity, a mineral “Qi,” and a structural stability that shallow-rooted clones cannot match.
The Sensory Experience: “Monkey Rhyme” and Submerged Fragrance
We wait until the threshold of Grain Rain (April 15) to harvest, rejecting the thin, “early” leaves for those rich in internal substance.
Chén Shuǐ Xiāng (Submerged Fragrance): Unlike the aggressive, fleeting orchid scent of clones, the fragrance of the Ancestral Houkui is “sunken into the water.” It is subtle, elegant, and reveals itself only as you drink.
Hou Yun (Monkey Rhyme): The palate is defined by a remarkably thick, sweet, and crystalline texture. The “Monkey Rhyme” is the lingering, resonant energy that stays in the throat—a sign of a tea that has truly matured in the wild.
Curator’s Verdict
“Taiping Houkui is a tea for those who value ‘Substance’ over ‘Skin.’ I chose this April 15 harvest because it carries the ‘Bone’ of the Houkeng mountains. It isn’t as ‘pretty’ or as ‘loud’ as the modern clones, but it has a depth of soul—a ‘Monkey Rhyme’—that haunts the senses long after the session. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ that proves true excellence arrives exactly when it is ready.”
