The Celestial Bloom: Blue & White Mallow “Tian” Jar

Hand-painted Qinghua Porcelain | Cheng Wenfang (Disciple of Chen Xiaoyong)

In the silence of the scholar’s studio, the blue and white palette represents the ultimate refinement—the meeting of sky and earth. This Qinghua Mallow Jar is a contemporary revival of the legendary Chenghua “Tian” (Heaven) vessels. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this piece as a sanctuary for your finest harvests, where the continuity of a 500-year-old technique meets the fresh energy of a rising master.

The Lineage of the Brush: Cheng Wenfang

This vessel is the spiritual labor of Ms. Cheng Wenfang, a talented artist and the dedicated protegée of Master Chen Xiaoyong.

  • The Transmission of Heart: In the Eastern tradition, the relationship between master and disciple is a sacred transmission of “True Heart.” Having studied under Chen Xiaoyong for years, Ms. Cheng has mastered the rare ability to imbue the brush with a rhythmic, living energy.

  • The Feminine Grace: Her rendition of the mallow blossoms possesses a subtle, fluid grace—a lightness of touch that makes the porcelain feel as though it is breathing. Every vine and petal is a testament to the “Temperature of the Hand” that defines our collection.

The Motif: Intertwined Mallow in Cobalt

The jar is adorned with the Intertwined Mallow Vine (Chán Zhī Qiū Kuí), executed in traditional Jingdezhen Underglaze Blue (Qīnghuā).

  • Ink-Wash Mastery: Utilizing high-quality cobalt, the painting exhibits a beautiful “Yun Ran” (ink-wash diffusion) effect. The blue shifts effortlessly from deep, resonant indigo to pale, misty azure, mimicking the movement of water and clouds.

  • The Symbol of Continuity: The mallow flower, symbolizing precious and fleeting beauty, is linked by an endless vine. This represents the eternal flow of the Tao—a visual prayer for a life of growth and balance.

The Mark of Heaven: “Tiān”

True to its imperial inspiration, the base carries the hand-painted single character Tiān (天 – Heaven).

  • Historical Echo: In the Ming Dynasty, the “Tian” mark signified the Emperor’s supreme authority and his connection to the cosmos.

  • A Sanctuary of Integrity: On this jar, the mark serves as a seal of authenticity and a reminder that we are all guests beneath the celestial canopy.

Form & Purpose

Standing at 10.5cm tall with a wider 5.2cm mouth, this jar is a substantial presence on the tea table.

  • Generous Capacity: It holds approximately 100g to 150g of tea, making it an ideal “living cellar” for your Sovereign Bloom Keemun or premium Oolongs.

  • The Ritual Fit: Like the original palace jars, the lid rests with an elegant, loose-fit grace upon the rim, inviting the practitioner to handle the vessel with intention and care.

Curator’s Verdict

“I am particularly proud to introduce the work of Cheng Wenfang to our community. It represents the ‘Living Path’ of Jingdezhen—the passing of the brush from one generation to the next. This Qinghua jar has a purity that is almost startling. It doesn’t need color to be beautiful; it relies on the strength of the line and the clarity of the blue. It is a noble home for your tea, and a reminder that true wisdom is often found in the simplest of contrasts.”

— Richard Zhang, Founding Curator
