Qing Dan: Agate-Infused “Sky Blue” Ru Ware-inspired Lotus Cup

Handcrafted Heirloom Porcelain | 1350°C Reduction Firing | Renci Youwu Studio | 100ml

“Clouds turn azure as if pregnant with rain; Waters shimmer and stir, birthing a veil of mist.”

Qing Dan (青澹) is a sensory journey into the heart of atmospheric beauty. At ZENTAOEAST, we are proud to present this 100ml masterpiece—an original form inspired by the minimalist elegance of the Song Dynasty. As a signature piece from the Ren Ci You Wu studio, the “Qing Dan” series takes its name from the immortal verses of poet Li Bai, capturing that fleeting moment when the sky’s deep blue meets the tranquil, mist-shrouded waters.

The Form: An Original Song-inspired Bloom

Moving beyond mere imitation, this cup features an original lotus-inspired silhouette. It is a contemporary tribute to “Sublime Subtraction”:

  • The Petal Architecture: The body is hand-sculpted into subtle, flowing petals, evoking a lotus blossom in serene repose.

  • Dimensional Harmony: With a 100ml capacity, a 4cm height, and a generous 8.5cm diameter, this vessel is designed as a “Master Cup” (Zhǔ Rén Bēi). Its wide aperture allows the tea’s liquor to breathe, while the petal-shaped rim offers a tactile connection to the artisan’s touch.

The Alchemy: Agate and 1350°C Fire

The legendary “Sky Blue” (Tiān Qīng) glaze is achieved through a rigorous, high-stakes mineral ritual in Jingdezhen:

  • Agate-Infused Glaze: Finely ground natural raw agate is blended into the glaze. This creates a depth of field that mimics the semi-opaque brilliance of ancient jade.

  • The 1350°C Frontier: While most Ru Ware-inspired ceramics are fired at lower temperatures, this cup is pushed to an extreme 1350°C in a reduction atmosphere. This ensures the minerals fully vitrify, resulting in a “fat,” lustrous texture that feels warm to the skin.

  • The Rarity of Survival: Due to the extreme heat and volatile mineral composition, the success rate is less than 17%. Each surviving cup is a rare artifact of craftsmanship.

The Sensory Soul: A Living Surface

  • The Color: A luminous “Sky Blue” that shifts between azure and soft celadon depending on the light. It is bright but never glaring, possessing a “moist” quality characteristic of top-tier porcelain.

  • The Antique Rim: The mouth-rim features a specialized mineral-glaze gilding (non-metallic), creating an “Antique Agate” hue that highlights the lotus petals’ contours.

  • The Perpetual Crackle: This is a “Living Vessel.” Its surface is characterized by a delicate crackle (Kāi Piàn). Over years of use, the tea oils will nourish these lines, causing the glaze to “bloom” and develop a unique golden patina—a record of every cup of tea shared.

The Mark: Qing Dan (青澹)

The base is hand-inscribed with the characters “青澹” (Qing Dan).

  • Qing (青): Representing the deep, soulful blue of the sky before rain.

  • Dan (澹): Representing the calm, shimmering movement of water.
This mark signifies its origin within the Ren Ci You Wu collection, a brand dedicated to the philosophy that “Compassion Begets Joy.”

Curator’s Verdict

“The Qing Dan Lotus Cup is for the connoisseur who appreciates the intersection of poetry and porcelain. Its 100ml volume makes it an exceptional Master Cup for those who prefer a more substantial presence in the hand. I find the original lotus shape particularly moving—it carries the weight of Song Dynasty history but feels entirely fresh and contemporary. It is a vessel that breathes with you.”
