Pine Wood-Fired Kiln Blue & White “Ice Plum” Gaiwan
Traditional Wood Kiln Masterpiece | Hand-painted Qing Dynasty Aesthetic | 140ml
“Winter’s crackle meets the first breath of spring; a scholarly bloom captured in wood-fired azure.”
At ZENTAOEAST, we present teaware that serves as a mirror to the scholarly heart. This Blue and White “Ice Plum” Gaiwan is a premier work from the Guan Xi Yin Shan Chai Fang (观溪隐山柴房) studio, affectionately known as Guan Xi Chai Yao. By combining traditional pine-wood firing with the iconic “Ice Plum” motif, this vessel captures the soul of Qing Dynasty porcelain—offering a tactile “Old Flavor” (Lǎo Wèi) that feels both historical and alive.
The Motif: The Poetic Harmony of “Ice and Plum”
The Ice Plum (Bīng Méi) pattern is one of the most representative and culturally profound decorative styles in the history of Blue and White porcelain. Especially prevalent during the Qing Dynasty, it is a visual poem of resilience and grace.
The Ice Crackle Ground: The background is hand-painted with “Ice Crackle” (Bīng Liè) lines, mimicking the natural, geometric splintering of a frozen pond in the heart of winter. It provides a sense of crystalline clarity and rhythmic depth to the porcelain.
The Plum Blossom: Scattered atop the ice are delicate plum blossoms, the first flowers to bloom while snow still blankets the earth. The plum represents fortitude, nobility, and purity—a spirit that does not fear the cold but thrives within it.
A Visual Narrative: The combination of cold ice and warm blossoms creates a refined, multi-layered effect. It is an aesthetic of “Sublime Elegance,” symbolizing the transition from the depths of winter to the hope of spring.
The Spirit of the Pine-Fired Wood Kiln (Chai Yao)
The extraordinary soul of this Gaiwan comes from its birth in a traditional Pine-Wood Kiln.
Oily Luster (Yóu Rùn): Through a protected firing process in the Guan Xi Chai Yao kiln, the vessel achieves a signature “oily” patina. The pine resin and intense heat interact with the original ore pigments to create a glaze that is smooth as mutton-fat jade, lacking the sterile brightness of modern kilns.
Original Ore Blue: The studio utilizes authentic ore cobalt, which “sinks” into the thick, wood-fired glaze. This creates a misty, three-dimensional blue that feels soft to the eye and rich in antique character.
The Silhouette: Two-Piece Minimalist Gaiwan
This Two-Piece Gaiwan (Lid and Bowl) is designed for the modern tea practitioner who values streamlined elegance. With a 140ml capacity, it is exceptionally balanced for a variety of teas, from high-mountain Oolongs to delicate Greens, providing a smooth pour and a comfortable grip.
The Mark: Guan Xi Yin Shan Chai Fang
The base is hand-inscribed with the studio’s mark: “观溪隐山柴房”. This mark is a seal of authenticity, representing a new generation of artisans dedicated to the slow, masterful tradition of Jingdezhen wood-fired ceramics.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Guan Xi Ice Plum Gaiwan is a masterpiece of storytelling. The ‘Ice Plum’ motif is a classic of Chinese aesthetics—it reminds us that resilience (the plum) is most beautiful when it breaks through the frozen barriers (the ice). I am particularly impressed by the oily texture of the glaze; it’s a hallmark of the Guan Xi Chai Yao studio. This 140ml vessel isn’t just a tool for tea; it is a piece of scholarly art that brings the warmth of the pine fire to your table.”
