Ming-Style Hand-Painted & Carved Lotus Solid Lid Rest
Handcrafted Jingdezhen Porcelain | Ming Yongle/Xuande Aesthetic | Substantial Weight
“A drum of timeless elegance; a heavy anchor for your tea lid.”
At ZENTAOEAST, we believe that even the smallest tea accessory should carry the weight of history and craftsmanship. This Solid Drum-style Lid Rest (Gaizhi) is a premier creation from the Xiao Yu Zhai (小予斋) kiln in Jingdezhen. Known for their mastery of Ming-style aesthetics, the artisans at Xiao Yu Zhai have created a piece that balances visual complexity with profound functional stability.
The Aesthetic: Ming Yongle & Xuande Revival
This lid rest is a sensory tribute to the peak of Blue and White porcelain—the Yongle and Xuande periods of the Ming Dynasty.
The Blue: The hand-painted Intertwining Lotus (Chán Zhī Lián) on the top and rim captures the “heaping and piling” effect of traditional cobalt. The blue is deep, vibrant, and possesses a rhythmic fluidity that feels alive.
The Hidden Lotus: Around the body of the drum, a rare technique is revealed. Beneath the glaze, seven lotus flowers are hand-carved in delicate relief (暗刻浮雕). These lotuses are not painted, but sculpted into the clay itself, creating a subtle, tactile dimension that emerges beautifully under the light.
The Form: Solid Stability (Gu Xing)
Unlike hollow lid rests, this piece is Solid Porcelain, giving it a “Fèn Liàng Gǎn” (substantial weight) that is rare for its size.
Drum Shape: Its robust drum silhouette provides a wide, stable surface.
Large-Scale Support: At 4.2cm in diameter, this is a large-sized lid rest. It is specifically designed to hold large lids, such as those from heavy Gaiwans or oversized teapots, without any risk of wobbling or sliding.
The Mark: Xiao Yu Zhai (小予斋)
The base is hand-painted in underglaze blue with the four-character mark: “小予斋制” (Xiao Yu Zhai Zhi). This signature represents a kiln dedicated to the scholarly pursuit of Ming-style blue and white teaware, ensuring each piece is a contemporary heirloom.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Xiao Yu Zhai Lid Rest is an unsung hero of the tea table. Most lid rests are light and prone to tipping, but this solid drum-style piece is incredibly grounded. What truly elevates it is the hidden carving—seven lotuses sculpted into the clay body. It creates a beautiful dialogue between the bold blue painting and the subtle white relief. It’s the perfect companion for a master-level Gaiwan lid.”
