Master Wang’s Nanqi: High-Altitude “Orchid & Cream” Anxi Tieguanyin

Longjuan Nanqi Terroir | May 2026 Spring Harvest | Master Wang Daoyu | Handcrafted Oolong

“The fragrance of the orchid does not float in the air; it hides within the water.”

At ZENTAOEAST, we source teas that speak of their origin. This Nanqi Tieguanyin is a masterpiece of terroir and tradition. Harvested on May 10th, 2026, from the steep, cloud-shrouded slopes of Nanqi Village in Longjuan Town, Anxi, this tea is handcrafted by the esteemed Master Wang Daoyu (王道玉) of Zhengjin Tea Industry. It represents the “hidden gem” of Anxi oolong—a tea of quiet power and deep mountain breath.

The Terroir: The Secrets of Nanqi (南崎)

Nanqi is a niche, high-end mountain field (Shanchang) prized by connoisseurs for its limited production and unique microclimate.

  • Altitude & Terrain: Grown at 600-900 meters on exceptionally steep slopes. The dramatic temperature shifts between day and night force the tea trees to concentrate nutrients and aromatic oils.

  • Mineral-Rich Sandy Soil: The sandy, loose soil of Nanqi is exceptionally rich in minerals. This results in the legendary “Nanqi Flavor” (南崎味)—a thick, textured tea soup with a strong “Mountain Breath” (Yun).

The Profile: Orchid Fragrance Infused in Water

Unlike common Tieguanyin that hits the nose with an aggressive aroma, the Nanqi flavor is sophisticated and enduring.

  • Lan Hua Xiang Luo Shui (兰花香落水): The soul of this tea is its orchid fragrance that “falls into the water.” The scent is not just on the surface; it is inextricably fused with the liquid, lingering on the tongue long after the sip is gone.

  • Hidden Milky Sweetness: Beyond the orchid, the lid and the soup carry a subtle, dreamy hint of sweet cream (甜奶香), providing a silky finish to the floral profile.

  • Deep Tea Qi: While its fragrance is “hidden” (Xiang You), its energy (Tea Qi) is profound. It provides a grounded, calming sensation that only tea bushes from high-altitude sandy soil can provide.

The Artisan: Master Wang Daoyu

Handcrafted by Master Wang Daoyu, this tea undergoes a rigorous traditional process. Master Wang’s expertise lies in his ability to “watch the weather to make the tea” (Kàn Tiān Zuò Chá), ensuring that the subtle orchid and milky notes are preserved through precise withering and bruising (Zuò Qīng).

Curator’s Verdict

“The Nanqi Tieguanyin is for the practitioner who is tired of ‘perfumed’ teas. It is an honest, powerful oolong. I am fascinated by the ‘Nanqi Flavor’—the way the orchid fragrance seems to sink into your palate. It is a tea that doesn’t shout; it whispers of high mountains and sandy soil. Master Wang has captured the soul of May 10th perfectly in this batch.”
