Listening to Spring: Agate-Infused “Sky Blue” Ru Ware-inspired Cup
Handcrafted Heirloom Porcelain | 1350°C Reduction Firing | Renci Youwu Studio | 80ml
“A lotus opens in silence; spring resides within the cup.”
Listening to Spring (Tīng Chūn) is a sensory tribute to the exact moment a lotus bud prepares to bloom. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this 80ml vessel as a contemporary revival of the legendary Song Dynasty aesthetic—a masterpiece that captures the mist of a thousand years within a jade-like embrace.
The Form: A Lotus Rising
Inspired by the “Sublime Subtraction” of Song-style design, the cup’s silhouette is a three-dimensional poem:
The Rim: A six-petaled flower mouth (Huā Kǒu), each petal hand-shaped like a lotus greeting the spring wind.
The Body: Rounded and full, mimicking the fertile heart of a lotus seed pod.
The Foot: A subtle flared base, representing the elegant stem of the lotus standing tall upon the water’s surface.
The Lineage: A Global Dialogue in Jingdezhen
While the original Ru-ware was born in Henan a millennium ago, its firing secrets were lost to history. To revive this “Imperial Dream,” Renci Youwu Studio chose Jingdezhen—the world’s porcelain capital—to gather the finest expertise. This vessel integrates the technical precision of Taipei, the traditional soul of Jingdezhen, and the rigorous firing standards of Japan, restoring the legendary “Azure Sky” based on sacred Forbidden City archives.
The Alchemy: Agate and Extreme Fire
The extraordinary “Oily” luster of this cup is the result of an uncompromising mineral ritual:
Agate-Infused Glaze: We use only natural original ore kaolin and glazes infused with crushed raw agate stones.
The 1350°C Frontier: To melt these precious minerals and achieve true jade-ification, the vessel is fired at an extreme temperature of 1350°C in a reduction atmosphere.
The Rarity of Survival: At this intensity, the yield rate is less than 17%. Each cup that survives is a rare victory of human spirit over the flame.
The Sensory Soul: A Living Surface
The Color: A luminous “Sky Blue” (Tiān Qīng) that shifts between azure and sea-foam green depending on the light. It is bright but never glaring, moist and translucent like fine jade.
The Agate Rim: The rim features an “Antique Agate” hue, achieved through a specialized mineral-glaze gilding technique (no real gold is used). This ensuring the color is permanent and will never fade.
The Perpetual Crackle: This is a “Living Vessel.” Its surface is characterized by a delicate Crackle (Kāi Piàn). This network of fine lines is not static; it will continue to develop, grow, and bloom as the tea oils nourish the glaze over years of use. Every new line that appears is a record of your sessions—a map of your personal journey toward stillness.
The Mark: Compassion Begets Joy
The base carries the hand-painted seal script character Cí (慈 – Compassion). Ingeniously designed to resemble the character for “Double Joy” (Xǐ), it carries the hidden blessing: “Compassion brings Joy.”
Curator’s Verdict
“The ‘Listening to Spring’ cup is for the practitioner who understands that true quality is a sacrifice. To endure a 1350-degree fire and a 17% success rate is the definition of ‘True Heart.’ I am fascinated by the ‘Living’ nature of this glaze—the way it continues to crackle and breathe as you drink from it. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ that reminds us that beauty, like a flower, is a process of unfolding.”
