The Eternal Vine: Doucai Intertwined Lotus Tea Cup
Hand-painted “Two-Fire” Porcelain | Master Chen Xiaoyong | 125ml
In the language of Eastern art, the Intertwined Vine (Chán Zhī) is a silent prayer for infinity. It is a pattern that never ends, symbolizing a lineage that flows without interruption. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this 125ml Doucai vessel—a masterpiece of geometric grace that captures the rhythmic heartbeat of nature within the discipline of the kiln.
The Motif: The Exotic West Asian Lotus
The central figure of this vessel is the Xi Fan Lian (West Asian Lotus or Passion Flower motif).
A Bridge of Cultures: Introduced during the Ming Dynasty, the Xi Fan Lian combined the purity of the Eastern lotus with the ornate, scrolling aesthetics of the West. It represents a “Global Zen”—a beauty that transcends boundaries.
The Symbolic Vine: The flowers are linked by continuous, flowing vines. In the “Path,” this represents the interconnectedness of all things—Oneness manifested in porcelain.
The Alchemy of Doucai: Soul and Skin
Consistent with our highest standards of craftsmanship, this cup utilizes the authentic Doucai (斗彩) technique, requiring two separate journeys through the fire:
The Underglaze Soul: The master first paints the delicate skeletal outlines of the vines and blossoms in Underglaze Blue (Qīnghuā). The vessel is fired at 1300°C, locking the “soul” into the porcelain bone.
The Overglaze Life: Master Chen Xiaoyong then meticulously fills the blue borders with soft mineral enamels. A second firing at a lower temperature fuses these colors, creating the signature Doucai effect: a misty blue “shadow” beneath the glaze dancing with the vibrant “light” on top.
The Master’s Precision: Chen Xiaoyong
Crafted by Master Chen Xiaoyong, a Senior Arts and Crafts Artist with over 20 years of experience in Jingdezhen. His steady hand is evident in the perfect symmetry of the vines—a feat of extreme focus where a single shaky breath would ruin the flow. Each cup carries the hand-painted imperial reign mark: “Dà Míng Chéng Huà Nián Zhì” (大明成化年制), honoring the golden age of the 15th-century Imperial court.
The Complete Ritual: The Matching Set
At 125ml, this cup is generous and dignified, fitting perfectly in the palm. To facilitate a complete sanctuary experience, we offer a matching Sancai Gaiwan with the same “Intertwined Lotus” motif, allowing you to create a visual harmony across your entire tea table.
Curator’s Verdict
“There is a remarkable ‘Weight of Peace’ in the Xi Fan Lian pattern. It is structured, yet it feels as though it is still growing. I chose this 125ml size specifically for those who enjoy longer, more reflective sessions with our Ancestral Teas. When paired with its matching Gaiwan, it transforms the tea table into a sacred garden. It is ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ refined into a symphony of symmetry.”
