The Willow Brow: Handcrafted Ancestral Qimei (Keemun)
April 10th Harvest | Iron Wok Hand-Fired | Hu & Wang Family Reserve
In the world of Keemun tea, if the Sovereign Bloom represents the soul, then The Willow Brow (Qíméi) represents the grace. Named for its slender, elegantly curved leaves that resemble the fine, willow-leaf eyebrows of a classical beauty, this tea is a visual and sensory testament to the “Temperature of the Hand.”
The Legacy: The Hu Family Sanctuary
This harvest comes from a small, family-run garden in the deep mountains of Likou, the core premium region of Qimen. For nearly twenty years, Hu Zheng and his wife Wang Huifen have tended to these ancestral Zhuye (Oak-leaf) tea trees, a living legacy passed down from the previous generation. Their garden is a sanctuary of biodiversity, where the tea breathes the same mountain air that has nourished their family for decades.
The Craft: The Ritual of the Iron Wok
The extraordinary beauty of the Willow Brow is not a product of a machine, but of a vanishing manual ritual.
Manual Shaping: During the final stages of production, Master Hu Zheng insists on hand-firing the tea in a traditional iron wok.
Persistence of the Hand: To achieve the tightly curled, slender strips and the shimmering golden tips, the master must reach his bare hands into the scorching heat of the wok, rhythmically rolling and rubbing the leaves with unwavering patience. It is this intense physical dialogue between the master’s skin and the heated iron that “sets” the soul of the leaf into its exquisite form.
Sensory Profile: Orchid Mist and Golden Tips
Before the first pour, the Willow Brow captivates with its appearance—obsidian-black leaves accented with vibrant golden buds.
The Fragrance: Upon infusion, it releases the “Keemun Scent” in its most concentrated form—a soaring bouquet of honeyed rose and wild orchids.
The Palate: Harvested on April 10, the liquor is remarkably fresh yet balanced. It offers a thick, velvety mouthfeel with a clean, lingering sweetness that resonates in the back of the throat. It is a tea that is as “stable” as it is “vibrant.”
Curator’s Verdict
“The Willow Brow is the most ‘Elegant’ black tea in our collection. I chose this specific harvest from the Hu family because of the ‘Integrity of the Shape.’ Most Qimei today is made by machines to save time, but you can taste the difference in Hu Zheng’s hand-fired leaves—there is a stable, calm energy that only the iron wok can impart. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ for the scholar who appreciates beauty that is earned through discipline and fire.”
