Na Lan: The Modern Scholar

Hand-engraved Qing Hui Ni Teapot | Master Jiang Tao

The Na Lan is a silhouette that defines the evolution of modern Zisha art. Born from the convergence of three classical forms—the stability of the Zhu Chu (Pillar Base), the geometry of the Shi Piao, and the antiquity of the Jing Lan—this vessel represents the pinnacle of contemporary Zen design. At ZENTAOEAST, we curate this 150cc masterpiece for the collector who seeks a bridge between ancestral heritage and modern clarity.

The Geometry of the “Hidden Curve”

At first glance, the Na Lan appears to be a study in straight lines and flat planes. However, its true mastery lies in a sophisticated optical illusion. The body, topped with a perfectly flush in-set lid, seems to descend in a straight line, but it is actually sculpted with a subtle, inward-tapering curve.

This minute adjustment gives the teapot a sense of “upright grace” rather than static heaviness. Achieving this specific proportion is notoriously difficult; even a hair’s breadth of error in the “beating of the cylinder” would ruin the visual tension that makes this teapot a masterpiece.

A Triple-Sided Narrative in Ink and Mineral

This teapot serves as a 360-degree canvas for Master Jiang Tao’s masterful hand-engraving, accented with rare red mineral pigments that are fired into the clay to create a striking contrast against the ash-gray surface.

  • Front: A delicate depiction of Taihu Stone and Orchids, symbols of resilience and refined character.

  • Side: Poetic Calligraphy—“Flowers reflect the sea against the sky; the heart knows itself amidst mountains and streams.” (倚天照海花无数,流水高山心自知).

  • Bottom: In a touch of hidden poetry, the base features two ancient, gnarled tree branches blooming with peach blossoms. This “Secret Spring” represents the vitality hidden within the old and the still, a private elegance revealed only to the practitioner during the ritual of care.

The Clay: Master Jiang’s “Qing Hui Ni”

The material is a unique Qing Hui Ni (Ash-Gray Clay), the result of years of mineral experimentation by Master Jiang Tao. Using Original Ore Duan Ni as a foundation and blended with natural black minerals, this clay achieves a sophisticated, slate-gray tone.

  • Tactile Texture: The surface is exceptionally porous and “sandy,” offering superior breathability that develops a rich, stony patina over time.

  • High-Fire Stability: Double-fired in a high-temperature gas kiln at approximately 1170°C, the vessel is structurally resonant and durable.

Curator’s Verdict

“The Na Lan teapot is what I call ‘Intellectual Stillness.’ I am fascinated by its profile—how it hides its curves within apparent straightness. But it is the bottom of this teapot that stole my heart: the red peach blossoms on the old branches. It reminds us that even in the coldest gray, life is blooming. It is a 150cc sanctuary, designed to help you find your own ‘High Mountains’ within a single cup.”
