Han Duo: The Resonant Bell of Stillness

Handcrafted Aged Zi Ni Teapot | Master Jiang Tao

The Han Duo silhouette is a profound exercise in “borrowing from the ancient to create the present.” Historically, the Duo was a large bell used in the Han Dynasty as a musical instrument or to signal commands. It was the Qing Dynasty calligrapher and scholar Mei Tiaoding (pseudonym: Nan Weng) who reimagined this bronze instrument as a vessel for tea, transforming a symbol of public authority into a medium for private contemplation.

The Soul of the Inscription: A Material Manifesto

This teapot serves as a canvas for the most famous inscription in Zisha history. Hand-engraved into the aged clay are the poetic lines of Mei Tiaoding:

“以汉之铎,为今之壶。土既代金,茶当呼荼。”

“Using the bell of Han to fashion the teapot of today. Since clay has replaced metal, tea shall return to its ancient name, Tu.”

This is more than calligraphy; it is a philosophy. By replacing “Gold” (metal) with “Earth” (Zisha clay), the scholar declares a preference for the organic over the industrial, and the warm over the cold. The mention of Tu (荼)—the ancient character for tea—signifies a return to the roots of nature. Signed by Nan Weng (赧翁), this inscription imbues the teapot with a scholarly spirit that resonates with the ZENTAOEAST mission of healing the modern soul through ancestral wisdom.

The Architecture of the Bell

The Han Duo is defined by its architectural stability and “Ordered Silence.”

  • The Silhouette: A majestic cylindrical body that feels grounded and unshakable.

  • The Details: It features a “Flat Inset Lid” (Píng Qiàn Gài) that creates a seamless horizon with the rim, topped with a minimalist “Bridge-shaped Knob”. The “Flat Ear” handle provides an ergonomic grip, balancing the verticality of the body.

  • The Craft: This is a half-handcrafted work by Master Jiang Tao. With over 30 years of experience, Jiang Tao has mastered the art of “Invisible Proportions,” ensuring the Han Duo is full-bodied and rhythmic, echoing the visual tension of the original bronze bells.

The Clay: Aged Zi Ni (Purple Clay)

The teapot is fashioned from Aged Zi Ni, a classic Purple Clay that has undergone extensive aging to remove any “harshness.”

  • Texture: Fired twice in a Push-plate Kiln, the clay has fully vitrified, resulting in a resonant, metallic “clink” when tapped, yet retaining the soft, matte luster of high-quality ore.

  • Breathability: The rich mineral composition provides superior breathability, making it the ideal partner for Keemun black tea, Oolong, or aged Puerh.

Curator’s Verdict

“The Han Duo is a teapot for the intellectual seeker. It is a vessel that carries a sound you can see. When I selected this piece, I was moved by the inscription—the idea that ‘Clay replaces Metal.’ In our digital age, we are surrounded by the ‘Metal’ of technology and noise. This teapot reminds us to return to the ‘Earth’—to the humble, the handcrafted, and the silent. It is a bell that calls the heart back home.”
