The Winter Quest: Hand-carved “Treading Snow for Plum Blossoms” Bamboo Tea Canister
“Qian Fu Diao” Shallow Relief | Inspired by Ming Dynasty “Zhe School” | 10-Year Timeline Heritage
At ZENTAOEAST, we believe that the most profound objects are those that carry a story within their grain. The Winter Quest (Tà Xuě Xún Méi) is a masterfully carved bamboo canister that brings a legendary Tang Dynasty pursuit to the palm of your hand. It is a portable sanctuary designed for the modern nomad to carry a moment of crystalline stillness into the daily journey.
The Ancestral Blueprint: A Journey Through Art History
The motif on this vessel is a meticulous re-composition of China’s most celebrated “Plum Quest” paintings, tracing a lineage of over 500 years:
The Ming Masterpieces: The composition draws directly from Wang E’s Treading Snow to Seek Plum Blossoms (Palace Museum, Beijing). It captures the iconic gnarled pines, the winter plum, the scholar on his donkey, and the attending boy. The brushstroke lines further reference Dai Jin, the founder of the “Zhe School,” known for the rhythmic, powerful curves of his branches.
The Jiading Legacy: This design also honors the Qing Dynasty patriarch of bamboo carving, Wu Zhifan. By adapting a classic brush-pot composition to the slender, vertical silhouette of a tea canister, our artisans have created an “Artifact of Resilience”—celebrating the noble spirit that seeks beauty in the harshest winters.
The Craft: The Grace of Shallow Relief
This canister utilize the Shǎn Fú Diāo (Shallow Relief) technique, the hallmark of the Huizhou carving tradition.
Mastery over Fiber: Unlike wood, bamboo consists of tough longitudinal fibers. Our master carvers must navigate the varying densities of the bamboo’s four layers—from the hard outer skin to the core—with surgical precision.
Textural Honesty: Shallow relief preserves the raw, organic grain of the bamboo. The lines are soft and elegant, embodying our philosophy of “Rugged Clumsiness” (大巧若拙). Every chisel mark is a testament to the master’s “True Heart.”
The Secret Alchemy: The 10-Year Ritual
The stability and radiant crimson-amber hue of this bamboo are achieved through a decade-long cycle of patience:
The Selection: Only 3-to-5-year-old “prime” winter bamboo is harvested. Younger stalks warp; older stalks become too brittle to carve.
The Keemun Bath: In a proprietary ritual unique to Huizihao, the raw bamboo is boiled in a concentrated bath of Keemun Black Tea. This organic process removes sugars and infuses the fibers with the deep, red-amber soul of the “Sovereign Bloom,” giving the wood a jade-like glow.
The Seasoning: The bamboo is then seasoned in a dry sanctuary for another 3 to 5 years before the first cut is made. This ensures the vessel will never crack or warp in your home.
Material Fusion for the Mindful Traveler
The Structure: The rim, lid, and base are sculpted from African Blackwood (Ziguangtan), providing a stable, “Stone-Gray” visual weight and architectural strength.
The Function: Standing at 12.2cm tall, it holds between 10g and 50g of tea. It is the perfect size for a 2-3 day journey, transforming a hotel room or a quiet courtyard into a sacred space.
The Pedigree: Huizihao (Emblem Heritage)
Produced by the master artisans of Huizihao, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage base. Their works have been selected as national gifts for world leaders at the G20 Summit and APEC, representing the pinnacle of Chinese craft on the world stage.
A Note on Natural Equilibrium”
“While every ZENTAOEAST bamboo offering undergoes a rigorous multi-year seasoning and stabilizing process to minimize structural shifts, bamboo remains a living, organic material that breathes with its environment. Please be mindful that in exceptionally dry climates (relative humidity below 40%) or near extreme heat sources—such as radiators, floor heating, ovens, or prolonged direct sunlight—the risk of cracking or warping (deformation) still exists. We invite you to shelter these ancestral objects from such extremes to ensure they remain your lifelong companions in perfect form.”
Curator’s Verdict
“Treading Snow to Seek Plum Blossoms is the ultimate metaphor for the Zen path—searching for the ‘True Heart’ amidst the frost. I chose this piece because of the incredible tension in the pine needles and the ‘Cang Sang’ (weathered) texture of the donkey’s path. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ that will grow oilier and darker as it breathes with you, becoming a visual record of your own journey toward stillness.”
