Han Jiang: The Solitary River
Handcrafted Aged Duan Ni Teapot | Master Feng Chao
The Han Jiang silhouette is a visual echo of one of the most famous poems in Chinese history: “A solitary boat, a straw-hatted old man, fishing alone in the cold river snow.” At ZENTAOEAST, we present this vessel as a tribute to the spirit of the hermit—a celebration of high virtue, solitude, and the profound silence of a winter landscape.
The Vision of Master Feng Chao
This masterpiece is the creation of Master Feng Chao, a certified National Industrial Artist. A university graduate who later studied under the renowned master Li Shangqing, Feng Chao represents the “Academic School” of Yixing pottery.
His work is celebrated for its “Gao Gu Leng Yi” (Ancient & Cold Elegance)—an aesthetic that favors intellectual depth over superficial decoration. Master Feng’s teapots are structured with a rigorous, scholarly skeleton, ensuring every proportion is balanced and every line is intentional. Each piece carries his personal seal on the base: “Feng Chao Zhi Tao” (冯超制陶 – Feng Chao Pottery).
The Architecture of Stillness: Eggshell Thin
Though robust in appearance, this Han Jiang teapot is an extraordinary technical feat of “Eggshell” thinness. The clay walls have been rhythmically beaten to a thickness so delicate it feels weightless in the hand.
Across this fragile surface, Master Feng has performed a ritual of Hand-Carving.
The Bamboo: A symbol of the “Gentleman” in Eastern culture, representing resilience and integrity. The bamboo leaves are carved with such vitality they appear to move in a ghostly wind.
The Calligraphy: On the reverse side, the characters “Qing Feng Zi Zai” (清风自在) are etched by the Master’s hand. It translates to: “In the Clear Breeze, One Finds Absolute Freedom.” It is a reminder that true peace is found within, unmoored from the noise of the world.
The Clay: Antique Aged Duan Ni
The teapot is crafted from Aged Duan Ni, a precious paragenetic ore from Huanglong Mountain. This specific clay has undergone an extensive period of natural aging (陳腐), allowing the “fire” of the minerals to settle into a warm, antique glow.
Luminous Texture: Fired to a sophisticated creamy-yellow with subtle hints of ash and red.
Superior Breathability: The pronounced “double-pore” structure acts as a living lung for your tea, softening the water and oxygenating the brew. It is the supreme choice for light-roast Oolongs or aged White Tea.
The Patina of Grace: Because of its high mineral complexity, this aged clay seasons beautifully. Over time, it will develop a soft, interior radiance—a “glow from within” that mirrors the wisdom of the poem it represents.
Curator’s Verdict
“Master Feng Chao has done something remarkable here: he has captured the ‘Coldness’ of a winter river and the ‘Warmth’ of aged clay in a single object. This 150cc Han Jiang is for the seeker of solitude. Its eggshell-thin body is a miracle of stability, and the hand-carved bamboo whispers of a strength that does not need to shout. It is not just a tool for tea; it is a companion for the soul’s quietest hours.”
