Full-Handmade Wood-fired Duan Ni “Bamboo Section” Zisha Teapot
Authentic Duan Ni Clay | Traditional Wood Firing (1190-1230°C) | 140ml
“A segment of living bamboo, tempered by the forest fire; an organic masterpiece of integrity and grace.”
At ZENTAOEAST, we curate vessels that capture the raw, untamed dialogue between earth and fire. The Po Zhu (Broken Bamboo) teapot is a remarkable full-handmade creation by the artisan Xin Sheng (欣昇). Crafted from golden Duan Ni clay and matured in a traditional wood kiln, this 140ml teapot is a tactile tribute to the “Gentleman of Plants”—the bamboo.
The Silhouette: The Resilience of “Po Zhu” (破竹)
The Po Zhu form is a masterpiece of organic realism in Zisha art.
The Architecture of Nature: The teapot’s body is shaped like a sturdy section of a bamboo trunk. The spout and handle are meticulously sculpted to resemble young bamboo twigs, complete with realistic nodes and textures.
Sculpted Vitality: A bas-relief of a bamboo twig with delicate leaves is hand-carved onto the knob and the front-right body. These lifelike details give the impression of a bamboo plant still breathing and growing from the clay.
Functional Design: The teapot features an extra-wide inset lid. This practical design allows for effortless loading of large-leaf teas (such as Wuyi Rock Tea or Phoenix Dancong) and makes cleaning remarkably easy.
The Alchemy: Duan Ni and the Wood Kiln
The soul of this teapot is forged in the extreme heat of a Wood-fired Kiln (Chai Shao).
1190-1230°C Transformation: Fired at a precise temperature range, the wood ash and pine resin interact with the minerals in the Duan Ni (Fortified Clay). This creates a unique, earthy patina—a “kiln change” (Yao Bian) that gives the surface a warm, sunset-glow and an incredibly “oily” texture.
Breathability: Duan Ni is prized for its high porosity. Firing it in a wood kiln enhances its ability to “breathe,” allowing it to soften the water and round off the edges of high-fired oolongs or aged puerhs.
The Artisan: Master Xin Sheng (欣昇)
Each teapot is 100% Full-Handmade, shaped entirely by the artisan’s hands without the use of molds. The base carries the hand-stamped mark of Xin Sheng, along with a custom icon designed by the artist himself—a seal of authenticity and individual creative spirit.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Xin Sheng Bamboo Zisha Teapot is one of the most expressive wood-fired pieces I have ever curated. I am particularly impressed by the wide-lid design—it’s a rare combination of high-art sculpture and daily practicality. The way the wood fire has brought out the golden, sandy texture of the Duan Ni is breathtaking. It is a teapot that feels like a fragment of a mountain forest on your tea table.”
