Full-Handmade “Na Piao” Jiangpo Red Clay Teapot

Authentic Jiangpo Hong Ni | Scholar’s Bamboo & Orchid Engraving | 260ml

“A vessel of grounded virtue; where the red earth of Yixing meets the cool breeze of the bamboo grove.”

At ZENTAOEAST, we celebrate teaware that serves as a canvas for classical Chinese philosophy. The Na Piao Teapot is a masterful full-handmade creation by the artisan Zhang Xinwei (章欣为). Crafted from the rare Jiangpo Hong Ni and adorned with scholarly engravings, this 260ml vessel is designed for the practitioner who appreciates both structural balance and poetic depth.

The Form: The Modern Classic “Na Piao” (纳瓢)

The Na Piao (often written as 捺瓢) is a sophisticated contemporary evolution of the legendary Shi Piao (Stone Gourd) silhouette.

  • Stretching the Horizon: Compared to the standard Shi Piao, the Na Piao is flatter, wider, and more expansive. Its lower center of gravity and gentler slopes provide a sense of grounded stability and “Sublime Subtraction” in design.

  • A Statement of Calm: The wider body allows larger tea leaves—such as aged Puerh or broad-leaf Rock Teas—to unfurl with ease, making it as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing.

The Clay: Red-Rich Jiangpo Ore (降坡红泥)

The teapot is made from Jiangpo Hong Ni, a distinctive co-existing clay (Tuan Ni branch) from the historic Jiangpo mining area at the junction of Huanglongshan and Qinglongshan.

  • Geological Rarity: This specific ore is richer in red-firing minerals than standard Jiangpo clay. It produces a warm, vibrant terracotta hue with visible multi-colored mineral specks—the “signature” of authentic Jiangpo ore.

  • Seasoning Potential: Highly breathable and mineral-rich, this clay will develop a profound, lustrous patina with every tea session.

The Art: Calligraphy & Engraving (Shū Huà)

The body and lid are hand-engraved with “Spring Thunder” (春雷 – Chūn Léi) motifs, creating a “Landscape on Sand”:

  • The Front: Bamboo & Wind. Engraved with a resilient bamboo stalk. The calligraphy reads: “Planting bamboo to invite the cool breeze.” It suggests that by cultivating one’s inner virtue (the bamboo), peace and like-minded souls (the breeze) will naturally follow.

  • The Reverse: The Peerless Beauty. Features a delicate composition of an orchid and a bamboo stalk. The inscription reads: “A peerless beauty dwelling in the empty valley.” This classic poetic imagery likens the orchid to a person of high integrity who remains pure and fragrant even in solitude.

The Mark: Xin Wei (欣为)

The base carries the hand-stamped seal of the maker: “欣为” (Xinwei). As a full-handmade piece, every curve is shaped by the artisan’s hands without the use of molds, ensuring that your teapot is a unique work of art.

Curator’s Verdict

“The Zhang Xinwei Na Piao is a ‘Scholar’s Pot’ in the truest sense. I am particularly drawn to the Jiangpo Hong Ni—it has a grit and character that feels ancient. The engraving is not just decoration; it’s a meditation. The phrase ‘Planting bamboo to invite the cool breeze’ is a beautiful reminder for any tea session. At 260ml, it is a generous and dignified centerpiece for your tea table.”
