San Shan Zhai: Fire-Tempered Copper “Lotus & Frog” Jianshui

Hand-Hammered Rock Texture | Flame-Oxidized Red Patina | Luoyang Artistry | 9cm

“Born of fire, forged by hand; a stony sanctuary for the tea table.”

At ZENTAOEAST, we curate objects where the elements of nature—fire, metal, and water—converge. This Pure Copper “Lotus & Frog” Jianshui is a tour de force from the San Shan Zhai (三善斋) studio in Luoyang. It represents a rare mastery of “Fire-Transformation,” where the intense heat of the forge is used not just to shape the metal, but to “paint” its surface with the soul of the copper itself.

The Finish: Fire-Transformed Red Skin (Huǒ Shāo Pí)

The striking reddish-brown hue of this vessel is not achieved through paints or chemical dyes.

  • High-Temperature Oxidation: The artisan subjects the pure purple copper to extreme flames. This intense heat triggers a deep, natural oxidation process, drawing out a rich, organic red patina from within the metal.

  • A Living Patina: This fire-tempered “skin” is durable and profound. Over years of tea sessions, the warmth of your hands and the steam from the tea will continue to “season” the copper, making the red tones deeper, glossier, and more soulful.

The Texture: Hand-Hammered “Rock-Skin”

The body of the Jianshui is a marvel of tactile storytelling.

  • Primordial Strength: Thousands of rhythmic hammer strikes create a rugged, undulating exterior that mimics the weathered texture of ancient mountain rocks (岩石感).

  • Hand-Forged Weight: The irregular surface catches the light in a way that highlights the raw, industrial beauty of handcrafted copper, providing a heavy, grounded anchor for your tea set.

The Lid: A Zen Study of the Lotus

The lid is an original sculpture of a withered lotus leaf, symbolizing the beauty found in every stage of nature’s cycle:

  • Wabi-Sabi Utility: The “worm-eaten” holes (虫蚀) in the leaf are not just aesthetic; they serve as the functional inlets for wastewater.

  • The Golden Visitor: A lifelike golden frog is perched upon the rim, its vibrant posture providing a stunning contrast to the deep, fire-oxidized red of the vessel.

The Craft: Masterfully Forged Treasure

The base carries the hand-carved four-character mark: “真宝匠造” (Zhēn Bǎo Jiàng Zào), meaning “Masterfully Crafted Treasure.” This seal is the hallmark of San Shan Zhai’s commitment to the revival of ancient Luoyang metalworking traditions.

What is a Jianshui (建水)?

A Jianshui is a traditional vessel used in Chinese tea culture to collect excess tea liquor, rinsing water, and other wastewater generated during tea preparation. Usually placed beside the teapot or tea tray, it helps keep the tea table clean and orderly while allowing the preparation of tea to proceed naturally and without interruption. Beyond its practical function, the Jianshui is an understated yet essential part of the Chinese tea table, reflecting the traditional appreciation for simplicity, cleanliness, and harmony in tea preparation.

Curator’s Verdict

“What sets this Jianshui apart is the Fire-Oxidized ‘Skin.’ Most copperware is chemically colored, but San Shan Zhai uses the ancient way—extreme heat. This creates a red that feels ‘grown’ rather than ‘applied.’ The rock-like texture combined with the organic lotus lid makes this one of the most expressive pieces of tea furniture I’ve encountered. It doesn’t just sit on your table; it tells the story of the forge and the pond.”
