Essential Lao Zi Ni “Ai Ling Zhu” Yixing Teapot
Old Purple Clay | Low-Profile Round Silhouette | Practical Daily Vessel | 135ml
“A compact, rounded classic for the focused tea session; aged clay that rewards daily use.”
At ZENTAOEAST, we believe that an entry-level teapot should be a reliable partner in your daily tea practice. The Ai Ling Zhu (Dwarf Spirit Bead) teapot, from the studio of artisan Huang Yuping (黄雨萍), is a straightforward and functional vessel. Crafted from well-aged Lao Zi Ni (Old Purple Clay), it is designed for those who seek a dependable Yixing pot that seasons quickly and handles with ease.
The Silhouette: The Low-Profile “Ai Ling Zhu” (矮灵珠)
The Ai Ling Zhu is a vertically compressed version of the traditional round “Spirit Bead” shape.
Balanced & Compact: Its low center of gravity makes it exceptionally stable on the tea table. The rounded interior chamber allows ample space for tea leaves—especially rolled Oolongs or compressed Puerh—to expand fully and release their flavor.
Efficient Pour: At 135ml, it is a versatile size for solo brewing or sharing with a friend, offering a clean and direct pour that is easy to control.
The Material: Well-Aged Lao Zi Ni (老紫泥)
This teapot is made from Lao Zi Ni, a variety of purple clay that has been aged to improve its stability and working properties.
Easy to Season: Lao Zi Ni is highly regarded by beginners because it responds beautifully to tea oils. With regular use, this “honest” clay will lose its matte kiln finish and develop a soft, warm luster (patina) relatively quickly.
Thermal Stability: Known for its excellent heat retention, Zi Ni is a versatile clay that performs well with almost any tea, helping to smooth out the flavor and provide a consistent brew.
The Artisan: Huang Yuping Studio (黄雨萍)
Crafted by the studio of Huang Yuping, this is a half-handmade (Ban Shou Gong) teapot. By using mold assistance for the primary body shape and hand-finishing the details, the studio is able to offer a structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing teapot at an accessible price point. The base is hand-stamped with the three-character signature of the artisan: “黄雨萍”.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Ai Ling Zhu is a classic ‘no-nonsense’ teapot. I chose this model for our collection because its ‘old’ purple clay is very forgiving and easy to take care of. It’s not a decorative showpiece; it’s a practical tool that wants to be used. If you’re looking for a dependable entry-point into Yixing teaware that will look better every time you use it, this is a solid choice.”
