Douli: The Hermit’s Silhouette
Handcrafted Da Hong Pao Zhu Ni Teapot | Artist Zhang Xuelei
The Douli teapot—named after the iconic conical bamboo hat worn by ancient Chinese fishermen and scholars—is a masterclass in minimalist geometry. It carries the spirit of the famous Zen poem: “A solitary boat, a straw-hatted old man, fishing alone in the cold river snow.” At ZENTAOEAST, we curate this piece for the individual who seeks a sanctuary of solitude and high-toned elegance.
A Study in Intimacy: 125ml
With a focused capacity of approximately 125ml (4.2 oz), this Douli teapot is an exercise in refined intimacy. It is a vessel designed for the quietest moments—perfect for a solitary meditation or a deep conversation between two close companions.
Its petite frame offers a remarkably feather-light handfeel, becoming almost weightless in the palm. This lightness is not merely physical; it allows the practitioner to maneuver the vessel with extreme precision, ensuring that the pour is as intentional as the thoughts behind it.
The Craft: Where Precision Meets Soul
This vessel represents a sophisticated dialogue between structural precision and the “temperature of the hand.” To ensure the absolute circular stability of the vessel, the body is crafted with the assistance of a manual molding tool.
However, the soul of the “Douli” shape lies in its lid. The iconic sloping “hat” profile and the rising, vertical dome of the lid are 100% fully handcrafted. Shaping this specific conical gradient and the delicate top without the aid of a mold is an act of extreme skill, especially when working with the volatile Da Hong Pao clay. Each teapot is signed with the artist’s personal seal: “Zhang Xuelei” (张雪磊).
The “Vermillion Emperor”: Da Hong Pao Zhu Ni
The soul of this vessel is the Da Hong Pao (Great Red Robe)—the rarest variety of high-crystal Zhu Ni (Cinnabar Clay).
The 30% Challenge: Da Hong Pao possesses an extraordinary shrinkage rate of nearly 30% during firing. In a small 125ml teapot, this tension is even more pronounced, making the seamless fit of the handcrafted lid a rare triumph of craft.
The “Zhu Ni Wrinkle”: Upon close inspection, you will find subtle, rhythmic micro-textures. These “Zhu Ni wrinkles” are the fingerprints of authentic, high-shrinkage ore—a definitive proof of its purity.
Luminous Transformation: Known for its “glass-like” mineral state, the teapot possesses a vibrant, crimson glow. When rinsed with boiling water, the color instantly awakens, intensifying in radiance and warmth.
Curator’s Verdict
“I chose this 125ml Douli teapot because it forces a pause. Its smallness is its strength—it is built for the focused appreciation of the leaf. Its light weight makes it feel like an extension of your own hand. This is not a teapot for a crowd; it is a sanctuary for one, or a bridge for two. It is the perfect embodiment of ‘Rugged Clumsiness’ refined into a delicate, crimson jewel.”
