The Hidden Forest: 2024 Da Hei Shu Lin Ancient Tree Ripe Pu-erh Cake

Yibang Micro-Terroir | Artisanal Small-Basket Fermentation | Master Yan Han | 100g

“A secret garden within the ancient forest; a ripe Pu-erh that breathes with the soul of Yibang.”

At ZENTAOEAST, we seek the rare “intersections” of tea—where the primitive energy of ancient forests meets the sophisticated alchemy of fermentation. This 100g Da Hei Shu Lin Ripe Pu-erh Cake is a landmark creation. Crafted primarily from the May 2024 harvest of ancient trees in Da Hei Shu Lin (Big Black Forest), with a masterful blend of Da Hei Shan (Big Black Mountain) spring material, this tea is a deep exploration of the Yibang micro-terroir.

The Terroir: Yibang’s Hidden Giants

Yibang is legendary as one of the six original Great Tea Mountains, famous for its rare small-and-medium-leaf ancient trees.

  • Da Hei Shu Lin (The Forest Charm): A niche micro-terroir where tea trees grow wild among dense primeval forests. This environment imparts a distinct “Forest Charm” (Shānyě Qìyùn)—a cooling, misty energy. While less famous than Mansong, its limited production and delicate, layered honey and fruit aromas make it a treasure for connoisseurs.

  • Da Hei Shan (The Sweet Fullness): An adjacent but distinct mountain field. Known for higher altitudes and exceptional honey fragrances, it adds a vibrant sweetness and structural fullness to the blend, balancing the deep forest notes of Da Hei Shu Lin.

The Artisan: Yan Han’s Ripe Tea Revolution

For over 20 years, Yan Han, a local Dai artisan from Yibang, has been a master of raw (Sheng) Pu-erh. However, this tea represents his latest artisanal challenge: reimagining ripe Pu-erh.

  • Ancient Tree Maturity: Using high-value ancient tree material for ripe Pu-erh is rare due to the high risk and cost of fermentation.

  • Small-Basket, Off-Ground Fermentation: Unlike industrial “pile” fermentation, Master Yan Han utilizes small baskets kept off the ground. This allows for precise control over temperature and oxygen, preserving the delicate “Ancient Tree spirit” while transforming the leaves into a rich, dark elixir.

The Sensory Experience

  • The Soup: Thick, dark, yet incredibly delicate. It possesses a “weight” on the palate that is velvety rather than heavy.

  • The Rhythm: Prominent Huigan (returning sweetness) and rapid salivation—traits rarely found in ripe Pu-erh, which are usually known only for their smoothness.

  • The Aroma: A clean, deep fragrance of aged wood, forest floor, and a lingering honey-sweet finish.

Curator’s Verdict

“The 2024 Da Hei Shu Lin Ripe Cake is an ‘experimental’ masterpiece. Yan Han has taken the delicate, elegant soul of Yibang ancient trees and passed it through the fire of fermentation. The result is a ripe Pu-erh that doesn’t just taste ‘smooth’—it tastes like the Big Black Forest itself. It is a thick, soulful tea with a salivation effect (生津) that I’ve rarely encountered in a Shu Pu-erh. A must-have for the explorer of micro-terroirs.”
