The Primal Jar: 18-Mesh Wa Guan

Handcrafted Coarse Sand Jiang Po Ni Teapot | Master Zhang Chen

The Wa Guan (Clay Jar) silhouette is an act of aesthetic return. Inspired by the humble water and grain jars of ancient China, this form celebrates the raw utility of the folk tradition. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this 180cc vessel as a monument to “Rugged Clumsiness”—a design that rejects the ornate to reveal the honest power of the earth.

The Aesthetic of the Ancestral Vessel

The design philosophy of the Wa Guan is defined by the phrase “Dun Pang Zhou Zheng”—meaning solid, upright, and spacious. Its full-bodied cylinder and rounded lines evoke a sense of unshakable stability. Unlike the complex curves of more decorative pots, the Wa Guan features a wide-mouth opening, mirroring the practicality of the ancient ceramic jars that once held the lifeblood of rural villages. It is a vessel that feels grounded, unpretentious, and profoundly calm.

18-Mesh: A Tactile Dialogue with the Earth

The most striking feature of this teapot is its texture. It is crafted from 18-Mesh Original Ore Jiang Po Ni.

  • The Coarse Standard: While standard teapots are made with 40-60 mesh clay, 18-mesh is an extreme grit that leaves large, visible particles of quartz and mica on the surface.

  • Sculptural Texture: To touch this teapot is to feel the heartbeat of the mountain. It possesses a weathered, “Cang Sang” texture that mimics ancient stone.

  • Superior Aeration: These large granules create a hyper-porous “double-pore” structure. This makes the Wa Guan a “living lung,” perfect for absorbing the excess “fire” of Wuyi Rock Tea or smoothing the depth of aged Puerh and Black Tea.

  • The Triple-Fired Ritual: This vessel has been fired three times in an electric kiln. This intensive process stabilizes the high-grit clay and draws out a deep, warm orange-red hue that glows with a natural mineral luster.

The Artisan: Zhang Chen

This masterpiece is the work of Zhang Chen, a brilliant young artist born into a legendary pottery lineage. A graduate of the prestigious Nanjing University of the Arts, Zhang Chen represents the “Academic School” of Zisha—where rigorous artistic theory meets traditional hand-skills.

Under the mentorship of Senior Master Guo Yuhua, Zhang has perfected a style that is “Archaic yet Innovative.” His work is sought after for its architectural strength and its ability to capture the “Oriental Spirit” in a modern form. Each teapot carries his personal seal: “Zhang Chen Shou Zhi” (张晨手制 – Hand-made by Zhang Chen).

Curator’s Verdict

“When I held Zhang Chen’s Wa Guan, I felt as though I was touching the very roots of Huizhou’s white walls and stony paths. The 18-mesh granularity is unapologetic—it doesn’t hide behind a smooth polish. It is a vessel of absolute honesty. At 180cc with a wide mouth, it is the most practical ‘daily driver’ for anyone who wants their tea session to feel like an escape to the primeval forest.”
