Chenghua-Style Blue and White “Okra Flower” Censer Cup

Hand-painted Jingdezhen Porcelain | Chenghua “Piping Blue” Revival | 85ml

“An echo of the Ming Imperial court; a flower that blooms in misty azure.”

At ZENTAOEAST, we seek pieces that bridge the gap between historical peak aesthetics and modern tea life. This Blue and White Hibiscus Censer-style Cup is a meticulous creation by the renowned Zi Fei Studio (子非陶瓷) in Jingdezhen. It is a sensory tribute to the Chenghua Emperor’s personal taste—an era defined by porcelain so refined and delicate it was likened to “the skin of a newborn.”

The Pigment: The Ethereal “Piping Blue” (Píngděng Qīng)

The soul of Chenghua blue and white porcelain lies in the choice of pigment. Unlike the intense, dark blues of the earlier Ming periods, this cup utilizes a revival of “Piping Blue” (平等青).

  • Soft Elegance: This local cobalt pigment produces a soft, greyish-blue hue that appears to float within the glaze. It is calm, misty, and free of the “heaviness” found in other styles.

  • Misty Luster: Under a thick, “mutton-fat” jade-like glaze, the hand-painted motifs appear to emerge from a dream, capturing the signature “misty” look of the 15th-century originals.

The Motif: The Imperial Okra (Hibiscus) Flower

The exterior of the cup is adorned with the classic Okra Flower (秋葵花 – Qiū Kuí Huā) pattern, directly inspired by the famous Chenghua Okra bowls.

  • Symbolism: In Chinese culture, the Hibiscus represents feminine grace, resilience, and a scholarly detachment from worldly noise. Each petal is hand-painted with fine, rhythmic lines, showcasing the artist’s breath and control.

  • The Hidden Treasure: Look inside the cup to find a hand-painted Baoxiang Lotus (宝相莲) at the base. This stylized “Treasure Lotus” is a symbol of divinity and purity, designed to be slowly revealed as you sip your tea.

The Silhouette: The Scholar’s Censer (Lú Shì)

This cup features the Censer-style (炉式 – Lú Shì) silhouette, modeled after ancient incense burners.

  • Stable and Dignified: With its slightly flared rim and weighted bottom, the shape offers a grounded feel in the hand.

  • Golden Proportion: At 85ml, it is the quintessential size for high-end tea tasting, allowing the aroma to concentrate while the flared lip directs the liquor precisely across the palate.

The Collector’s Mark

The base features the hand-written six-character mark: “丙午艺天珍藏” (Bǐng Wǔ Yì Tiān Zhēn Cáng). This translates to “Collected by Yitian in the Year of Bingwu”—a signature mark that signifies its status as a boutique, studio-level creation intended for serious collectors.

Curator’s Verdict

“The Zi Fei Studio has a rare talent for capturing the ‘vibe’ of the Chenghua period without making it look like a cold museum replica. The Okra Flower Censer Cup feels alive. The ‘Piping Blue’ pigment is so soft it feels like it’s breathing under the glaze. I love the surprise of the lotus at the bottom—it turns a simple tea session into a quiet meditation. This 85ml vessel is a must-have for those who appreciate the scholarly side of Jingdezhen porcelain.”
