The Verdant Dragon: Chenghua Style Doucai Cup
Hand-painted “Two-Fire” Porcelain | Masterfully Scaled by Pian Yu Tang
The Green Dragon of the Chenghua era (1464–1487) represents the zenith of the Ming Dynasty’s imperial aesthetic. While typical dragon motifs evoke raw power, the Chenghua dragon possesses a rare, scholarly elegance—a spirit of “Restrained Majesty.” At ZENTAOEAST, we present this proportionally scaled reproduction by Pian Yu Tang (片羽堂), an artifact that allows you to hold five centuries of history in your palm.
The Alchemy of Two Fires: The Doucai Technique
Doucai (斗彩), meaning “Contrasting Colors,” is one of the most complex and high-risk techniques in Jingdezhen’s history. This 80ml cup is the result of a rigorous Double-Firing ritual:
The First Fire (1300°C): The master first paints the intricate outlines of the dragon and auspicious clouds in Underglaze Blue (Qīnghuā). The vessel is glazed and fired at a high temperature to achieve a rock-solid, jade-like vitrification.
The Second Fire (800°C – 1000°C): The vibrant Green Enamel is meticulously hand-filled within the blue outlines. The cup is then returned to the kiln for a second, lower-temperature firing, permanently fusing the emerald pigments into the surface.
A Symbol of Imperial Stillness
In the Ming court, the Green Dragon was a category reserved exclusively for the Emperor’s private use.
The Motif: The dragon is rendered with rhythmic, flowing lines, symbolizing cosmic balance. Its emerald hue creates a striking contrast against the misty blue outlines, reminiscent of a forest emerging from the morning fog.
Historical Rarity: Original Chenghua Green Dragon cups are among the rarest museum pieces in existence, fetching millions at international auctions. This reproduction by Pian Yu Tang honors that legacy, ensuring every claw and scale follows the exact geometry of the originals.
The Imperial Signature
On its base, the cup carries a faithful, hand-painted reproduction of the original six-character reign mark: “Dà Míng Chéng Huà Nián Zhì” (大明成化年制). Executed in the era’s signature “child-like” calligraphy, this mark serves as a seal of authenticity and a connection to the “True Heart” of the Ming artisans.
Curator’s Verdict
“The Chenghua Green Dragon is a masterclass in ‘Honest Simplicity’ disguised as imperial luxury. It doesn’t need gold to look expensive; it relies on the perfect harmony of blue and green. This 80ml cup is the ideal vessel for high-fragrance teas like The Sovereign Bloom. The way the green dragon swirls as you tilt the cup adds a layer of ‘Qi’ to your tea session. It is a masterpiece built for a lifetime of resonance.”
