Celadon Cloud Drip: The Sky After Rain

Handcrafted Jade-Infused Tea Bowl | Master Fan Daoming (Lan Huo Yao)

The Celadon Cloud Drip tea bowl is a sensory tribute to a legendary dream. In Eastern aesthetics, the “Azure Sky” (Tiān Qīng) is the color of the heavens as they first clear after a heavy rain—a hue so sublime it was famously whispered to have appeared in the dreams of the Song Dynasty Artist-Emperor, Huizong. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this vessel as a bridge between that imperial vision and the spontaneous vitality of the Tao.

The Alchemy of the Southern Sky

While the famous Northern Ru-ware is known for its high-aluminum sky-blue, this masterpiece is born from the kilns of Jingdezhen. Utilizing the southern region’s iron-rich glaze properties, Master Fan Daoming has achieved a distinctively deep and luminous azure.

  • Jade-Infused Luster: This is not a standard celadon. Master Fan incorporates a proprietary blend of Emerald, Agate, and Jade powders into the raw mineral glaze.

  • The 1300°C Ritual: To melt these precious minerals, the bowl is subjected to intense heat exceeding 1300°C for over 15 hours, resulting in a “Jade-feel” that is incredibly dense and cool to the touch.

“Cloud Drip”: The Art of Intentional Flow

The defining feature of this bowl is its “Cloud Drip” (Liú Yòu) effect.

  • The Technique: Master Fan applies a thick layer of partial glazing, stopping midway down the body. In the extreme heat of the kiln, the molten glaze begins to migrate downward by gravity, creating natural, teardrop-like forms at the base.

  • Philosophy in Form: This flow is a deliberate act of Wu Wei (non-contention). The artisan sets the stage, but the fire and gravity decide the final path. Each “drip” is unique—a frozen moment of liquid energy that provides a grounded, tactile grip for the fingers.

The Master: A Taoist Path through Porcelain

This vessel is the spiritual labor of Master Fan Daoming, a Taoist priest of the Zhengyi School and the founder of the Lan Huo Yao (Lazy Fire Kiln). With a background in ancient artifact restoration, Master Fan spent decades in silence before perfecting his mineral glazes. He believes that true art cannot be forced; it must arise as naturally as a cloud forms in the sky. Each piece carries his hand-engraved signature under the glaze: the characters “Three” (三) or “One” (一).

A Living Vessel: The Perpetual Crackle

Designed with the low center of gravity and stable, medium-thick walls of the Song Dynasty masters, this 110ml bowl is built for the Ritual of Stillness. Its surface is “alive”—the delicate Crackle (Kāi Piàn) will continue to develop and bloom as the tea oils nourish the glaze over decades of use. It is a vessel meant to age alongside you, evolving into a lifelong companion.

Curator’s Verdict

“When I first held this bowl, I felt the stability of the earth and the fluidity of the sky. The way the thick glaze pools at the bottom like a dewdrop is a masterclass in ‘Rugged Clumsiness.’ Master Fan has captured the exact moment the rain stops and the light returns. At 110ml, it has a generous, comforting weight in the palm—perfect for those long sessions where you seek to find your own center within the steam.”
