The Autumn Song: Master-Carved “Bean Pod & Cicada” Bamboo & Tin Tea Canister

“Xiandi Ke” Sunken Relief | 10-Year Timeline Heritage | 97.63% Pure Tin Liner

At ZENTAOEAST, we curate objects that bridge the gap between the material world and the spirit. The Autumn Song is the second half of a rare pair of canisters inspired by the 18th-century masterpieces of Shen Quanlin, the Qing Dynasty’s most celebrated bamboo carver. It is a vessel of profound introspection, designed to protect your tea and mature alongside your own journey.

The Motif: The Soul of the Scholar’s Garden

This piece is a meticulous revival of the “Bean Pod & Autumn Cicada” (Dòujiá Qiūchán) motif.

  • The Narrative: A cicada, the symbol of purity and high virtue, rests upon a ripening bean pod. In Eastern philosophy, the cicada’s song marks the peak of autumn—a time for harvest and reflection.

  • The Inscription: Hand-engraved in rhythmic calligraphy is the original poem:

“The bean trellis is heavy with newly ripened fruit,
In idle moments, the fingers move slowly across the Go board.
The cicada clings to a new branch, singing until nightfall,
Its melody, broken yet continuous, feels like a whispered poem.”

  • The Seal: The body of the carving features the “Quan Lin” (全林) seal, ensuring the historical resonance of the original master is preserved.

The Craft: “Xiandi Ke” (Sunken Relief)

This canister utilizes the Xiàndì Kè technique—the most prestigious “hidden jewel” of Huizhou bamboo carving.

  • Layered Depth: Unlike ordinary carvings that sit on the surface, the “Xiandi Ke” method carves the motif into the bamboo, creating a sunken landscape with multiple nested layers.

  • Visual Magic: This technique creates a unique interplay of light and shadow. The deeper the carving, the more “misty” the blue-gray shadows appear against the warm bamboo.

  • Built for “Pan” (Handling): Because the motif is recessed below the surface, it is naturally protected from wear. As you handle the canister over decades, the raised edges will develop a dark, oily patina while the motif remains pristine—an object designed to outlast its owner.

The Alchemy: The Keemun Tea Bath

The radiant, crimson-amber hue of this bamboo is not a stain; it is a transformation.

  • The Ritual: The 5-year-old winter bamboo is boiled in a concentrated bath of Keemun Black Tea. This proprietary Huizihao method stabilizes the fibers, removes natural sugars, and infuses the wood with the “Qi” of the mountain.

  • The Decade of Patience: After the tea bath, the bamboo is seasoned in a dry sanctuary for another 3 to 5 years. Only those pieces that remain perfectly stable after a decade of waiting are chosen for the blade of Masters of Huizihao.

Material Integrity: Blackwood and Purity

  • The Foundation: The rim and base are sculpted from African Blackwood (Ziguangtan), providing a stable, “Stone-Gray” visual anchor.

  • The Shield: The interior is lined with a 97.63% Pure Food-Grade Tin Liner. As the “Gold of the Tea World,” tin is perfectly airtight and odor-free, preserving 18g to 30g of your finest harvests in a state of perpetual freshness.

The Pedigree: Huizihao (Emblem Heritage)

Produced by the master artisans of Huizihao, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage base. Their works have been presented as state gifts at the G20 Summit and Asian Games, representing the absolute pinnacle of the “Four Carvings of Huizhou.”

A Note on Natural Equilibrium”

“While every ZENTAOEAST bamboo offering undergoes a rigorous multi-year seasoning and stabilizing process to minimize structural shifts, bamboo remains a living, organic material that breathes with its environment. Please be mindful that in exceptionally dry climates (relative humidity below 40%) or near extreme heat sources—such as radiators, floor heating, ovens, or prolonged direct sunlight—the risk of cracking or warping (deformation) still exists. We invite you to shelter these ancestral objects from such extremes to ensure they remain your lifelong companions in perfect form.”

Curator’s Verdict

“This is the perfect companion to our ‘Flora & Grasshopper’ canister. I am captivated by the ‘Xiandi Ke’ technique—it is the ultimate expression of our ‘Architecture of Silence’ philosophy. To see the cicada carved into the earth of the bamboo is a reminder that the most beautiful things are often the most modest. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ that will jade-ize with your touch, becoming a radiant relic of your daily rituals.”

— Richard Zhang, Founding Curator

The sanctuary is open to all voices. We invite your reflections on the form, spirit, and heritage of this offering.
