The Entwined Bamboo: A Heritage of Stillness
Handcrafted Overhead Handle Teapot | Master Liu Huachun
The Entwined Bamboo (Zhujié Tiliáng) is a vessel that captures the rhythmic resilience of nature. An iconic silhouette from the early “Yixing Factory No. 1” era, this teapot represents a level of complexity and dedication that has become exceedingly rare in the modern age. It is a tribute to the “Architecture of Silence,” where the organic form of bamboo meets the engineering challenge of the overhead handle.
The Art of the Entwined Handle
The most striking feature of this masterpiece is the Overhead Handle (Tiliáng). Unlike standard handles, this structure is composed of two separate bamboo stalks, meticulously hand-kneaded and sculpted to intertwine with one another. This “double-growth” design symbolizes strength, unity, and the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the earth.
The handle is not just a functional part; it is a three-dimensional sculpture. Every bamboo joint is hand-formed, creating a tactile experience that conveys the “temperature of the hand.” Complementing the handle is the “Old-Method” Appliqué—where the bamboo leaves are individually hand-pasted onto the body, reflecting the wind-swept grace of a bamboo grove.
A Vanishing Legacy: The 40-Year Standard
This specific model was once a hallmark of the prestigious Yixing No. 1 Factory, but its production has largely ceased due to the extreme time and skill required. Today, only a handful of veteran artisans with over 40 years of experience possess the “muscle memory” and patience to execute this form.
Crafted by Master Liu Huachun, a National Industrial Artist and a Director of the China Zisha Culture Research Association, this teapot is a proud labor of time. At 245cc, it possesses a dignified presence, offering enough volume for a shared ritual while maintaining the delicate balance of its complex structure.
The Earth: Original Ore Zi Ni from Huanglong Mountain
Fashioned from the legendary Original Ore Zi Ni (Purple Clay) of Huanglong Mountain, the material provides a deep, matte-brown canvas that highlights the intricate textures of the bamboo.
Breathability: The superior mineral structure ensures excellent oxygen exchange, mellowing the tea and enhancing its depth.
The Patina of Age: This clay is exceptionally responsive to “seasoning.” As the “Entwined Bamboo” accompanies you through years of tea sessions, the surface will develop a lustrous, silk-like glow, mirroring the growth of a living bamboo plant.
Curator’s Verdict
“When I first saw this Tiliáng teapot, I was struck by its ‘Stubborn Beauty.’ In Dingshu Town, most people avoid this shape because it is too difficult and takes too long to make. But that is exactly why it belongs at ZENTAOEAST. The way the two bamboo stalks support the entire weight of the vessel is a metaphor for the strength we find in balance. It is a rare relic of a golden age, built to be a lifelong companion.”
