The Azure Abyss: Gradient Stem Tea Bowl
Handcrafted Monochromatic Porcelain | Master Yong Haibo (Yong Kiln)
The Azure Gradient Stem Bowl is a contemporary masterpiece that captures the infinite transition between the sky and the sea. Rooted in the “Sky Blue” traditions of the historic Jun Kiln, this vessel reimagines ancient elegance through the lens of modern minimalism. At ZENTAOEAST, we present this offering as a vessel for the mind—a tool for visual meditation.
The Architecture of Upright Grace
This cup is designed in the classic Stem Bowl (Gāo Zú Zhǎn) silhouette, a form that lifts the ritual of tea above the ordinary.
The Silhouette: The body is a rounded, hemispherical orb that sits with poised stability. Its lines are restrained and inward-looking, finished with a slightly flared rim that greets the lips with a gentle, out-turned grace.
A Bridge of Eras: The proportions are a deliberate dialogue between the subtle temperament of the Song Dynasty and the sharp, clean aesthetics of modern design. It stands 5cm tall, a height that demands a dignified, mindful hold.
The Alchemy of the Gradient: A Study in Blue
Master Yong Haibo has utilized his expertise in silicate science to create a monochrome glaze that is both stable and incredibly dynamic.
The Exterior: The outer walls are dressed in a soft, misty sky-blue with subtle gray-blue undertones—reminiscent of the mountains of Huizhou on a rainy morning.
The Interior Journey: Inside the bowl, the color performs a silent symphony. It begins at the rim as a pale azure and descends into a deep, silent indigo at the heart. This natural “glaze pooling” (Jī Yòu) creates a sense of profound depth, as if looking into a deep mountain pool.
The Anchor: The high-footed stem is finished in the deepest shade of cobalt, providing a visual weight that grounds the ethereal blues of the body.
The Scholar-Artisan: Master Yong Haibo
This vessel is the spiritual and scientific labor of Master Yong Haibo, a leading independent scholar and the founder of Yong Kiln (雍窑).
The Scientific Soul: As a visiting professor and a specialist in glaze pharmacology and kiln architecture, Master Yong deciphers the ancient “fire-alchemy” of Jingdezhen.
Heritage Restoration: His team has spent over a decade analyzing mineral ores to restore the lost hues of the dynastic kilns. Each cup is 100% handcrafted, representing a “True Heart” that balances academic rigor with artisanal warmth.
Curator’s Verdict
“What moved me about this Azure Stem Bowl is its ‘Focus.’ In our digital desert, we are constantly distracted, but this cup forces your gaze to travel inward, toward the deep blue at its center. Master Yong Haibo has achieved a color that feels both ancient and futuristic. At 75ml, it has a weight that feels significant yet delicate. It is a sanctuary in the palm of your hand.”
