Autumn Embers: The Flared Impressionist Cup

Handcrafted Original Ore Masterpiece | Master Luo Shiming (Jingdezhen)

At ZENTAOEAST, we believe that a tea cup is a living history of a single moment in the kiln. The Autumn Embers cup is a profound expression of our “Rugged Clumsiness” philosophy—a vessel where the ancient minerals of the earth are transformed by the volatile breath of a pine-wood fire.

The Alchemy of the Surface: Fire, Ash, and Ore

The mesmerizing visual landscape of the Autumn Embers is not the result of a synthetic paint, but a natural convergence of three primordial forces:

  • Original Ore Minerals: Master Luo utilizes unpurified mineral glazes rich in Tin and Iron. During the 1300°C firing, these minerals undergo a molecular dance, surfacing as shimmering Tin Spots (Xī Bān) and rustic Iron Specks. These are the “geological freckles” of the mountain, providing a tactile depth that feels like weathered stone.

  • The Pine Fire Ritual: The soul of this cup is forged using traditional Masson Pine wood. In the world of ceramics, pine is prized for its exceptionally high resin content.

  • The Master of Ash (Luò Huī): As the pine wood burns, the vaporized oils and resins circulate within the kiln, combining with the wood ash to settle onto the molten glaze. This “Natural Ash Glaze” (Luò Huī) is what creates the cup’s unique “oil-painting” texture. Because of the pine’s high oiliness, the resulting ash glaze is significantly more moist, unctuous, and jade-like than those produced by other fuels.

The Technique: Impressionism in Clay

Master Luo Shiming, an artist of the new generation with a deep background in professional painting, treats the cup as a three-dimensional canvas.

  • The Engobe Layering: Using the Engobe (化妆土) technique, he applies layers of liquid clay to create a textured, “impasto” effect.

  • A Spontaneous Narrative: The interaction between the iron-rich clay, the tin minerals, and the resinous pine ash creates a surface that evokes the smoldering warmth of an autumn forest floor. No two cups are identical; each is a unique record of where it sat within the 30-hour fire.

Form & Function: The Scholar’s Silhouette

Standing at 6cm tall with a 6.8cm flared mouth (Piě Kǒu), this 125ml vessel is designed for the serious practitioner.

  • Sensory Design: The flared rim is engineered to broaden the tea’s surface area, allowing the delicate aromatics of our Ancestral Teas to be fully released.

  • Tactile Warmth: The medium-thick walls and hand-trimmed base provide a substantial, comforting weight in the palm, grounding the spirit during a session of stillness.

Curator’s Verdict

“When you look closely at the Autumn Embers cup, you aren’t just seeing a color; you are seeing the resin of the pine trees and the minerals of the earth fused into a single skin. I chose this piece because it refuses to be perfect. The way the oil-rich pine ash has melted over the rugged tin spots creates a texture that is ‘refined but not greasy.’ It is a masterpiece of ‘True Heart’—a lifelong companion that reminds us that beauty is found in the traces of the fire.”
