Alabaster Bloom: The Impressionist Wood-fired Gaiwan
Handcrafted Original Ore Masterpiece | Master Luo Shiming (Jingdezhen) | 145ml
At ZENTAOEAST, we view the Gaiwan as a miniature sanctuary—a space where water, leaf, and spirit find their equilibrium. The Alabaster Bloom is a two-piece vessel that captures the resilient beauty of white blossoms emerging from the charred depths of a winter forest. It is a masterpiece of “Rugged Clumsiness,” curated for those who seek a ritual that is as visually moving as it is sensory.
The Motif: Purity Amidst the Embers
Adorning one side of the bowl and the center of the lid are Hand-painted White Blossoms.
The Technique: Utilizing the Engobe (化妆土) technique, Master Luo Shiming applies thick layers of white mineral slip. The flowers are not merely painted; they have a physical, relief-like presence that rises from the clay, much like an oil painter’s impasto.
The Philosophy: In the dark, mineral-heavy landscape of the wood-fired surface, these white petals represent the “True Heart” (Benxin)—the purity that remains untouched by the “dust” of the world.
The Alchemy of the 30-Hour Pine Fire
Like all pieces in the series, this Gaiwan is forged in a traditional Pine-wood Kiln at 1300°C.
Resinous Luster: The vaporized oils of the Masson Pine have combined with wood ash to create a thick, “greasy” glaze texture. It feels warm and organic in the hand, possessing a jade-like depth that matures and glows more intensely with every tea session.
Mineral Fingerprints: The unpurified Original Ore Clay has released its natural iron and tin, resulting in the rustic specks and shimmering tin spots that provide a weathered, geological backdrop for the delicate white flowers.
The Temperature of the Hand: Two-Piece Balance
This is a “Liang Cai” (Two-piece) Gaiwan, consisting of a bowl and a lid—a form favored by scholars for its minimalist elegance and ease of handling.
Manual Rhythm: Standing at 7.8cm tall with an 8.8cm mouth, every curve was hand-thrown on the wheel. The internal walls carry the faint, rhythmic ridges of the Master’s fingers, while the lid fits with an organic, artisanal clearance that allows the tea to “breathe.”
Generous Scale: At 145ml, it is an ideal size for solo meditation or an intimate session for two, providing enough volume for the leaves to unfurl fully and release their “Ancestral Qi.”
Curator’s Verdict
“The Alabaster Bloom is the most poetic piece in the series. I am moved by the way the white flowers stand out against the dark, ash-glazed surface—it is a visual metaphor for the Zen realization of ‘brightness within the void.’ At 145ml, it has a substantial, grounding weight. It is a ‘Lifelong Companion’ that turns the simple act of brewing tea into a profound artistic experience.”
