The Hidden Dragon: 2019 Xiangzhulin Ancient Tree Raw Puerh Pearls

1800m High-Altitude Sanctuary | More Than 100-Year-Old Arbor Heritage | Namo’s Family Reserve

In the vast folds of the Lincang mountains, some treasures remain whispered secrets. The Hidden Dragon is an exceptional 2019 vintage Raw (Sheng) Puerh from Xiangzhulin Village. Located a dozen kilometers in linear distance from the world-famous Bingdao, this micro-region offers the same legendary “Rock-Sugar” resonance but with a soul that remains unhurried and untainted by the modern desert.

The Origin: Above the Clouds (1,800m – 2,100m)

Xiangzhulin sits in the high-altitude valleys between the Nu Mountains and the Nanting River.

  • The Micro-Climate: Perched at elevations between 1,800 and 2,100 meters, the garden is a landscape of steep slopes and dense foliage.

  • Protected Heritage: Far from being a “new” region, Xiangzhulin is recognized under the Lincang Ancient Tea Tree Protection Regulations as a top-tier protected heritage site. Many of these sentinel trees are estimated to be over 500 years old, survivors of half a millennium of mountain mist.

The Lineage: Five Generations of the Lahu People

During our 2019 expedition, Miles and I were honored to meet Namo, a resilient woman of the Lahu ethnic group.

  • A Living Legacy: Namo’s home is a place of deep human warmth, housing a family of over a dozen people who have guarded this grove for five generations.

  • The Climbing Grandmother: The true spirit of the sanctuary is Namo’s 90-year-old grandmother. Despite her age, her body remains vital and strong. Every spring, she refuses to stay behind, insisting on physically climbing the ancient tea trees to harvest the first buds herself. To see her high among the branches is to understand the true “Qi” of this land—it is a tea of longevity and unyielding life.

  • The “Sugar-Rock” Soul: Because Xiangzhulin shares the same geological vein as the neighboring Bingdao—located just a dozen kilometers away as the crow flies—the tea possesses that elusive, crystalline sweetness (Bīng Táng Yùn). It is an elegant, soaring fragrance that settles deep into the heart of the water.

The Evolution: 2019 Vintage Pearls

Harvested on the very first flush of April 2, 2019, this tea was hand-rolled into 8-gram Dragon Pearls (Lóng Zhū) for convenient, precise brewing.

  • Dry-Aged Purity: After years of professional dry storage, the initial “green” sharpness has vanished, replaced by a mellow, thick, and concentrated texture.

  • The Transformation: The liquor is a shimmering gold, and the palate is a masterclass in layering: starting with a delicate floral aroma and ending with a powerful, persistent returning sweetness.

Curator’s Verdict

“I chose the 2019 Xiangzhulin pearls because they represent the ‘Purity of the Soul.’ In a world where luxury is often mass-produced, Namo’s family offers something real. Seeing her 90-year-old grandmother climb those ancient trees changed my perspective on tea—it isn’t just a drink; it’s a source of vitality. These pearls have aged beautifully, turning into a liquid stillness that helps you find your own ‘Hidden Dragon’ within.”
