Wuhui Reduction-Fired Zisha
Wuhui Reduction-Fired Zisha is a traditional firing technique in Yixing Zisha craftsmanship that transforms the appearance of purple clay through a reduction firing process. After the initial firing, the teapot is reheated in a carbon-rich, oxygen-limited environment, allowing the iron minerals within the clay to undergo chemical changes and develop deeper tones.
Unlike painted surfaces or artificial coloring, Wuhui firing changes the natural mineral expression of the clay itself. The process can create elegant shades ranging from deep black and charcoal grey to subtle blue-grey tones, while preserving the original sandy texture and tactile qualities of Yixing Zisha.
Historically appreciated by collectors for its restrained and mysterious appearance, Wuhui-fired teapots reveal another artistic possibility of purple clay craftsmanship. The final result depends on the interaction between clay composition, firing conditions and the artisan’s experience, making each piece unique.
