Dark Tea

Chinese Dark Tea, known as Hei Cha (黑茶), is one of the six traditional categories of Chinese tea, distinguished by its traditions of post-fermentation and aging. Unlike Black Tea, which refers to 红茶 in Chinese tea classification, Dark Tea develops its distinctive depth, aroma and character through microbial fermentation, aging and transformation. From Hunan Anhua Hei Cha and Hubei Qing Brick Tea to Guangxi Liubao Tea and Yunnan Ripe Pu-erh, it encompasses remarkably diverse regional traditions, with differences in raw materials, climate, processing and aging creating distinctive expressions shaped by generations of craftsmanship.

Dark Tea is often not a tea that immediately wins you over with the bright aromas and refreshing flavors that may characterize green tea, black tea or oolong tea. Its appeal can be quieter and more difficult to describe—a sense of comfort and ease that many experienced drinkers discover through the overall feeling of drinking it. In traditional Chinese tea culture, Dark Tea is often regarded as a gentler tea, and some tea drinkers find it more comfortable to drink than more stimulating teas. For those who find caffeine or strongly stimulating teas difficult to tolerate, it may offer a more comfortable choice, although individual responses to caffeine vary.

At ZENTAOEAST, we seek out distinctive Hei Cha from respected tea-producing regions and dedicated tea makers, with an emphasis on traditional craftsmanship, authentic origin and individual character. We believe the beauty of Dark Tea lies not only in the tea as it is made, but also in the transformation that takes place through time.
